Obituary For Walter “Red” Hogan

Hogan, Walter E. “Red” of Rockland, 82, passed peacefully from this life surrounded by his loving family on January 26, 2022. Walter was the beloved husband of almost 57 years to Marcia (McSheffrey) Hogan; caring father to Patrick E. Hogan and his wife Shannon of Norwell, Marcia Ann Hogan and her wife Bonnie Coulstring of Rockland and Moira Hogan Petrocelli of Boston. Brother to Paul Hogan of Weymouth, Ann Hogan of Weymouth and the late Richard “Dick” Hogan, Mary Haley and Robert Hogan; proud grandfather to Erin, Joseph, Cameron, Molly, Katherine and Meghan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Walter was born in Boston and grew up in Neponset to the late Margaret and Michael Hogan. He was a graduate of Boston Technical High School, Class of 1957. After high school he graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology. Walter started his career at Raytheon in Quincy, then Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Connecticut and eventually retired from ITT Continental Baking Co. (aka “Hostess Cakes”) after a 30-year career as a route driver (Teamsters Local 494). After a brief “rest”, he decided to rejoin the workforce as an auto parts driver for McGee Toyota until he retired ‘again’, in 2020. Walter was an avid Boston Sports fan, especially the Boston Bruins and the New England Revolution. He became a huge soccer fan while watching his daughters play youth soccer. He first coached them and then eventually became Rockland Youth Soccer’s president for 10+ years. He and his wife Marcia have been Revolution season ticket holders since their inaugural season (1996). Walter also had various hobbies, such as working in his yard, tending to his Bonsai plants, and tinkering with his expansive spread of model trains.

Walter’s biggest achievement was his family. He adored the family. Whether it be his children’s sporting events growing up or his grandchildren’s; he made every effort to make it to their events to support them. Walter truly loved his wife, Marcia. The early years living in Connecticut away from their Boston families helped forge a strong relationship which was evident every day. They enjoyed taking multiple trips together to Ireland to experience the culture and research their family ancestry. Walter cherished his Irish roots.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Monday, January 31, 2022, from 4-7 PM at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, Rockland at 135 Union St. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, 9:00 AM at the Holy Family Church in Rockland. The burial at Holy Family Cemetery will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Rockland Youth Soccer Association, P.O. Box 200, Rockland MA or to the Rockland Food Pantry, 12 Church Street.
