Obituary For Thomas E. Bates

Thomas E. Bates, 70, of Abington, passed away on February 15, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Born on March 8, 1954, to Kenneth and June Bates, Tom was raised in Abington alongside his brothers, Jack and Larry and was always very close to his Uncle Gordon Bates and his wife Carrie. He married the love of his life, Nancy (Shoughrow) Bates, in 1974, and together they built a life centered around family, hard work, and community.

Throughout his career, Tom was a dedicated entrepreneur, owning and operating businesses in Halifax, Hanson, and Brockton. Known for his strong work ethic; he took pride in serving his customers and forming lasting connections in the community. He was a hard worker who was passionate about caring for his homes, especially the lawn. Tom loved to relax by the pool, whether in Halifax or Naples, Florida rooting for his favorite Boston sports teams.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Nancy; his son, Kenneth Bates and his wife Rosa-Mai; his daughter, Meredith (Bates) Morgan and her husband Shaun; his niece, Nancy Shoughrow, and her son, Robert Arrowsmith Jr and his wife Angela; and his cherished grandchildren, Brendan Morgan, Natalie Bates, Rory Morgan, Alex Bates, Robert Arrowsmith III, Shelby Arrowsmith, and Hunter Arrowsmith. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love.

Memorial Visitation will be held at Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home at 135 Union St, Rockland, MA on Friday, February 21 from 3:30-6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

What an amazing man. He was an intelligent, kind and a loyal friend to both myself and my late fiancé John Cunningham. We shared many wonderful precious memories. My deepest sympathy to Nancy and his entire family. He will be sadly missed. RIP Gayle
