Obituary For Susan Y. Coughlin
Susan Yvonne Coughlin
October 13, 1949 — February 20, Susan (Stinson) Coughlin, 76 of Rockland, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at home on February 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, caring and an extraordinary lifelong love.
Born in Quincy, MA, on October 13, 1949, Susan was the daughter of the late Jack and Barbara Stinson. A proud product of the Rockland school system, she attended community college and built a life defined by responsibility, hard work, and a heart for service.
Her life changed forever in a 10th-grade geometry class, where she met the love of her life, Bob Coughlin. From those high school hallways, they built a life together that spanned more than 62 years, including over 52 years of marriage—a testament to a devotion that only grew stronger with time.
As a devout communicant, Susan’s faith was the most important component of her being. She dedicated herself to Holy Family Church as a Eucharistic Minister, CCD teacher, and RCIA team member. She was also an active member of the Holy Family Mother’s Club and Parent Association. Above all else, God will eternally remain foremost in her heart.
After a sabbatical to raise her four girls, Susan spent over 20 years as a special needs educator at the North River Collaborative, caring for special needs children. Susan, also enjoyed her time as a customer service agent at Kohl’s in Hingham—a role she held as much for the "incredible discounts" as for her paycheck.
Susan found her peace in the natural world, from days at the beach to hours spent in her gardens grooming her plants and pulling "those pesky weeds." A voracious reader, she often finished more than a novel per week, usually while hanging out at the pool.
She was the devoted mother of four daughters: Erin Coughlin-Doherty of Rockland; Danielle Coughlin and fiancé Jim Torrey of Rockland; Melissa Coughlin of Washington D.C.and Kaitlyn Trowbridge and husband Mark of Kingston.
The true jewels of her life were her grandchildren: Emma, Grace, Ryan, Riley, and Caroline. She also leaves her beloved grand-dogs, Cooper, Molly, and Marty.
Susan will always remain the sister of Barbara Machaby and her husband Steve of Rockland, and the late Carol Collins of New Hampshire and brother John Stinson. She is further survived by several loving nieces and nephews, in-laws, and friends.

Bob and family, We are so sad to hear of Sue's passing. Ironically, I was at a funeral Mass at Holy Family yesterday, displaced by the storm, and thought I saw you and Sue there. She was a true gem and a joy to know. Sue and all of you will be in our prayers. The Darigan family, Plymouth

Beautiful picture of Sue. I will remember seeing her at Mass every Sunday with Bob and also from working at North River Collaborative (NRC) where she was so kind to all her special needs students. I worked there too but I was a Van Driver who took the students/teachers out for field trips. May she rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to your whole family! I remember Mrs Coughlin as an unflappable mother of four strong women which I admire greatly. I remember feeling so welcome at a legendary HFS pool party where Mrs Coughlin allowed us to be kids! My heart goes out to you during this time 💕

To my BFF of 68 years. From meeting as 8 year olds at HFS through our recent Poopsies pizza nights with the girls - and that includes the infamous Miss Carey's geometry class that changed your life. There are so many memories... I'll miss you forever....
