Obituary For Sonja D. Herring
With a heavy heart, we announce the unexpected passing of a beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend.
In her high school years, Sonja was a proud member of the Class of 1984 at Rockland High School, where she distinguished herself as a three-sport varsity athlete in soccer, basketball, and track. A natural leader, she served as captain of both the track and basketball teams and earned All-League honors in basketball and track. She was also part of a basketball team that captured a South Shore League Championship with an impressive 16–4 record. Known for her vibrant personality, she was voted “Most Talkative” and named “Class Clown,” a reflection of the joy, humor, and energy she brought to those around her.
Following graduation, Sonja earned a partial scholarship to Springfield College, where she pursued
Physical Education and competed in track for three years. She later transferred to UMass Boston, continuing her athletic career in both basketball and track at the NCAA Division III level.
Sonja went on to share her passion for sports and education by teaching and coaching in the Quincy Public Schools at the high school level, coaching soccer, basketball, and track, and later continued her work in physical education with the Boston Public Schools.
Sonja was fun, smart, and full of life, with a big personality that made her unforgettable to all whoknew her. Her laughter was contagious, bright, genuine, and capable of lifting spirits even on the hardest days. She lived with a fierce love for her family and friends, always showing up withstrength, loyalty, and an open heart.
As a daughter, she was deeply cherished. As a sister, sister-in-law; caring and protective. As an aunt, she brought joy, playfulness, and endless affection. And as a friend, she was deeply loyal, compassionate, and true.
Her absence leaves an immeasurable void, but her memory will live on in the countless moments of laughter, love, and connections she shared. She will be deeply missed, forever loved and remembered
Sonja’s family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate her life on Thursday, May 7, 2026 from 9:00-10:00 AM. A prayer service will be held at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Melrose Cemetery in Brockton.
