Obituary For Shirley Swinamer
Shirley Margaret (Day) Swinamer of Rockland passed away on April 20, 2024 under the excellent care of the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham. Shirley was born in Keene, New Hampshire on September 4, 1927 to the late Etta (Randall) and Earl Day. Preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Roland Swinamer and her daughter-in-law, Dona (Lonergan) Swinamer. Devoted mother to her children, Stephen Swinamer of Sagamore Beach, MA, Robert (Sharon) Swinamer of Jacksonville, FL , Lori (David) Bennett of Sugar Land TX. Her love extended beyond her immediate family to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who held a special place in her heart. She leaves behind memories that will be treasured by Lisa Swinamer of Jacksonville, FL, Lauren (Bennett) Obregón of Montague, MA, and her great-grandchildren Logan Musgrave of Florida and Maio Obregón of Massachusetts.
Shirley is survived by her sister Lillian Hainz of Missouri and preceded in death by her siblings Herbert Day, Bebe Sevigny and Earl Day.
From her upbringing in Roxbury to her enduring marriage to Roland that began in 1947, every chapter was filled with love and adventure. She moved to Dorchester in 1953 and after having three children, moved to Rockland in 1964. Shirley lived in her home in Rockland for 60 years. She embraced new experiences, whether it was moving to Rockland or obtaining her driver's license in her thirties, proving that it's never too late to explore life's possibilities. Over the years, Saturday nights were for meeting friends to go dancing or playing cards at each other’s homes. Shirley worked in many different jobs over the years including teaching knitting and crocheting in adult education classes. One of her most diverse jobs was at the munitions and fireworks factory in Hanover.
Her passions were as diverse as her experiences. Whether she was baking delicious treats, engaging in friendly card games, or immersing herself in knitting and crocheting, Shirley found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was a puzzle enthusiast, both in solving crossword puzzles and piecing together jigsaws, reflecting her sharp mind and love for challenges.
The family would like to acknowledge her good friend and companion, Marge O’Sullivan and her friend of more than 60 years, Joan Driscoll. The support of her neighbors over the years, especially Tony, Sandy, Rich, Barbara, Mike, Jen, and Brooke, brought comfort and companionship during both joyous and challenging times.
In honoring Shirley's wishes, there will be no visitation or memorial service. Instead, she will find her final resting place with Roland at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. Though she may have left this world, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Shirley's legacy of love, strength, and friendship will endure for generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Pat Roche Hospice Home, 86 Turkey Hill Lane, Hingham, MA 02043

Shirley, I was so happy to have spent some time with you at your home and hospice in the last few months. It was hard the last few years to spend time with my Dad so sick. Thanks for teaching me the love of crocheting when I was a young girl. I made many blankets because of you. I have to say you where one of the most generous people I ever met. Making hundreds of hats for needy children. You would run to find something if someone was looking for a specific item and you would always find it. You were something else. I was blessed to have known you for the past 50 years. Rest in peace. I know you are with Rollie either dancing or playing cards. Please give my Dad a kiss for me if you run into him. All my Love Always Lori & Chuck Noyes
