Obituary For Samuel H. Olson

Samuel Herbert Olson, of Hingham, formerly of Rockland and Norwell, passed away peacefully on Sunday November 6, 2022, at his home at Linden Ponds. Born in Weymouth on May 15, 1932, he was the last surviving child of the seven children of Levi R. and Margaret (Hurtin) Olson. Raised in Rockland, he was a graduate of Rockland High School in 1950. He graduated from Bridgewater Teachers College in 1954 and received a Master of Arts degree in History from Boston University in 1957. He taught for Social Studies, English and History for nearly 40 years in the public schools of Abington, Milton, and Needham. He loved passing on his extensive knowledge of history to family, friends, and acquaintances. He resided in Norwell for 50 years, moving to Linden Ponds in 2018. He was a communicant of St’ Helen’s Parish, Norwell. Mr. Olson was a longtime member of the Norwell Historical Society and served on its Board of Directors. In 2010 the Society published his book, A Narrative of South Scituate, Norwell – 1849-1963. He also authored numerous feature articles for the Society’s newsletter. He is survived by three generations of beloved nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by brothers John and Thomas and sisters Virginia, Barbara, Eleanor and Pauline Olson Childs. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family church in Rockland on Monday November 14, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. Internment will in Holy Family Cemetery in Rockland. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the diabetes research organization, JDRF, at 60 Walnut St # 102, Wellesley, MA 02481.
