Obituary For Robert W Butler Jr.
Robert W Butler Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 12, 2026. He was the son of Robert W Butler and Mary Rose Butler. Robert is survived by his sister Sally Butler of Weymouth, and Corinne (Butler) Long (Robert Long) of Harwich. He left a niece and nephew, Michael Long and Marianne (Long) Walsh, and 4 loving great nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Rockland High School and Northeastern University, Bob worked as a computer engineer at the beginning of the computer revolution. In the early days of computer’s being introduced to society, Bob worked on GPS and other systems that are now part of our everyday life. He carried on his love for computers all his life, building his own systems to game and create music.
The family cottage in Plymouth was Bob’s place of peace. He spent his time enjoying the view of the pond, while swinging on his favorite porch swing. The longtime residents of the pond, and his family, will all remember him enjoying his time swinging in the sunshine.
Funeral services for Bob will be private.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Bobby. He truly was a genius. He walked his own path. It is never easy to be unusual. He is now one with the universe as we all will be. May you rest in peace Bob.

My father George L Whiting MD grew up in close proximity to Robert Butler Sr. My father being an only child called Sr his "brother." They were close until the end of their lives. The parents would come to our home in Abington to swim in our pool during the summer months. It was always a nice time. They would always bring Sally and Bobby. It was always a fun day. Corinne didnt come along until later. Our lives didnt intersect much as they lived in Rockland and we lived in Abington. Bobby was a Math and Computer genius whe apparently was a world class Dungeons and Dragons computer game expert. I believe his degree from Northeastern was in Electrical Engineering...no small task there. Bobby was one of the early designers of fiber optic communication systems. I know that the whole family enjoyed summers at their "camp" in Plymouth which they still owned the last time I had communication with the family. When I would go to their home in Rockland to repair their appliances "Uncle Bob" and Mary were still very much involved with the kids and grand kids. I loved visiting them learning about past family history. Uncle Bob could fix anything and he would be with me every moment I was there. He talked about Bobby and his engineering skills often. They were a wonderful family. I have nothing but fond memories of that family. I crossed paths with Sally at UMass Amherst and Corinne when we were in the same RN orientation at Brockton Hospital in 1980. All good memories. I understand that Bobby met with some challenges later in life as we all do. I hope he is at peace now.

Oh Corrine ~ I am so sorry to learn of the passing of your brother. I remember a very special time with him when you and I got to ride on the Northeastern band bus to their football game against Boston University...I loved that! May you and your family treasure your many memories of Bobby over the years. The vision of his swinging on the porch in the sunshine is indeed peaceful and beautiful.
