Obituary For Robert Mahoney
Robert P. Mahoney, 64, of Rockland, Massachusetts passed away suddenly surrounded by his loving family on July 5, 2021. Bob was a strong, welcoming, hardworking dad, husband, brother, son, and Bubba.
Bob was born on April 20, 1957 in Somerville, Massachusetts to James and Virginia Mahoney. He was one of 5 siblings. On September 11, 1982 he married the love of his life, Diane Hocking. Together they had 4 wonderful boys Rob, Thomas, Michael, and Dennis.
He graduated from Somerville High School in 1975. Bob went on to work at Polaroid for 21 years as an engineering technician. Later in his career, he worked at Newton Scientific in Cambridge, Massachusetts as a Senior Engineering Technician. When Bob wasn’t at work, you could find him in his happy place coaching sports. He coached youth baseball, basketball, and football. He coached his own sons for more than 16 years. He was a dedicated father who was extremely proud to watch his sons grow up with the strong morals that he helped to establish.
Around the age of 18, Bob was diagnosed with Alports syndrome which eventually led to kidney failure. In 2001, Bob received a kidney transplant donated from his sister Maureen. For a long while Bob lived a healthy happy life. Eventually, as is common among transplant patients, his doctors found different types of skin cancers that needed to be removed. In 2016 Bob was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma which eventually moved to his lungs. He battled cancer for just over four years going through treatments including surgeries, Chemotherapy, and Immunotherapy. For the last year he was on dialysis successfully finishing his last round of Immunotherapy when he suffered a sudden stroke.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Diane Mahoney, mother Virginia Mahoney, four sisters Virginia Lombard, Kathi Briand, Maureen Felts, Helen Falcone and families; his four sons Rob, Thomas, Michael, and Dennis, their loving partners, many nieces and nephews, and three amazing grandchildren.
A wake will be held on Friday, July 9 from 5:00-8:00pm at Magoun Biggins Funeral Home located at 135 Union Street in Rockland, Massachusetts. A memorial service will be held at the same location Saturday, July 10 at 11:00am.
As Bob was a recipient of a kidney transplant in 2001, the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the National Kidney Foundation https://www.kidney.org/donation.
Bob will be loved forever and missed greatly by his family and friends.

Bob will be missed by all who knew him. We knew him best as a caring family man - warmly welcoming our daughter, Erica, into the Mahoney family when she married his oldest son, Rob. Watching him become a grandfather - "Bubba" - was so much fun. He would delight in watching his granddaughters, Emily and Makenna when he visited them in Seattle. The photos we posted show the joy. Sending love to all of his family and friends... - Mike and Colleen Sexton
Mr. Mahoney always put up with our teenage-shenanigans. I always appreciated his sense of humor and tolerance of our ridiculousness growing up. The Mahoney family will always have a very special place on my heart- I am wishing you all comfort and peace at this tragic time. Please know that Mr. Mahoney positively impacted many lives💕❤️ I am forever grateful for having known him. - Juliann LoSciuto
