Obituary For Robert F. Butman
Robert F. Butman, 88, of Pocasset, MA formerly of Rockland, MA, passed away peacefully with his daughter Kimberly B. Partridge by his side, on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the South Shore Hospital, after a period of failing health.
A retired Assistant Vice President of the Rockland Trust Company for 30 years Mr. Butman was born on March 28, 1929 and raised in Cohasset, MA where he graduated from Cohasset High School with the Class of 1947.
Bob graduated from Bryant and Stratton College in Boston and attended the evening division of Bentley College in Boston. He completed courses in Finance through the University of Chicago and graduated from the "School of Banking" at Williams College in North Adams, MA
He proudly served our country for two years from 1951 to 1953 in the U.S. Army as a Corporal in Germany during the Korean War. He was with the 28th Infantry Division with the Occupational Troops. He was assigned to the Finance Corp. in Division Headquarters.
After the service he was employed as General Cashier of the Statler Hotel and Hilton Hotel of Boston. Later on he was an accountant and cashier for Coffin and Burr stock brokerage firm in Boston where he also met Peggy. After getting married in 1956 they moved to Rockland to make their home. He was employed by the Rockland Trust Company as the manager of the Wholesale Finance Department - also known as the Floor Plan Department handling all the financing of the Boat, Car and Airplane Dealers the bank had as customers. He retired in 1992 after 30 years of dedicated service to the bank. After retiring from the bank Peggy and Bob built a new home in Pocasset living there until September of 2016. They also spent many winters at their home in Belleview, Florida near their dear friends Larry and Dolly Ronco. Late last year Bob made the decision to move closer to his daughter and her family to assisted living at the Village at Proprietors Green of Marshfield. It was a big decision, but with his many health issues and no longer driving it made sense to make the move. He was so happy in his new home, met new friends and felt very welcomed there.
He was a member of the American Legion, Post 188 of Sandwich Ma, Member of the Pocasset Woods Homeowners Association, member of the Pocasset Village Association, and member of the Salt Marsh Lane Association all of Pocasset.
His hobbies through life were gardening and landscaping at his homes. He took great pride in his work and loved the results of his hard work. He had a green thumb and could grow anything. As a young man he was a great swimmer, life guard and competed in races at Sandy Beach, Cohasset, MA where his father ran the beach house and his mother worked in the office. Bob was a very organized, self-driven man. He loved his work over the years at the bank, his dedication to the church and its work to help people. He was very proud of his family and grandchildren always praising and encouraging them to do your best and get an education. He loved to tell stories of his life, explaining in detail things that happened so many years ago. He talked about his time in the Army serving in Germany and the many trips he was able to take while there. Throughout his jobs in life he always seemed to handle money. He had a sharp mind and very detailed in his work.
Bob was a true gentleman. His daughter Kim always says that if you look up the word "Gentleman" in the dictionary you will see his picture. He was a charming, caring and giving man never asking for anything in return. He is going to be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rockland, MA for over 50 years. He served on the Board of Deacons, Board of Trustees, sang in the choir and did occasional solos. He was the financial secretary for many years. He worked on building the handicap ramp with his friends Wes, Angus, Forbes. He and his daughter landscaped and planted beds of flowers to complete the project. He was also a member of the Rockland Kiwanis Club serving as Treasure and Past President of the club. While living on the cape they attended the North Falmouth Congregational Church participating in many events held at the church throughout the year.
His wife was the former Peggy L. (Woodward) Butman, who passed away in 2007. He is survived by a daughter Kimberly B. Partridge, son-in-law James M. Partridge, two grandsons - Kevin J. Partridge of Rockland and Brian M. Partridge and his wife Elizabeth J. Golini of Brooklyn, NY. A sister Eleanor B. Barrett of Medford, NJ also the brother to the late Charles E. Butman, Jr. of Cohasset, MA and to his sister the late Dorothy B. Hoogeveen of China Village, ME, several nieces and nephews along the east coast all the way to Alaska. His parents were the late Charles E. Butman, Sr. and Eleanor L. (Kenerson) Butman of Cohasset.
The family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate his life on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St. in Rockland from 4:00-7:00 pm. Services will be held at 10 am on Monday, May 8, 2017 at the First Congregational Church in Rockland. Burial will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne, MA 02532.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. Kim know that your dad is in a much better place and he is happy to be beside your Mom again. I agree totally with you that your Dad's picture is right beside the word "gentlemen" in the dictionary. Love Karen Byron
