Obituary For Robert E. Looney
Robert E. Looney, Jr. 69 of Rockland died at his home on September 14, 2011 after a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of 42 years to Kathleen M. (McCarthy) Looney. Loving father of Christopher R. and his wife Tricia Crimi-Looney of Marshfield and Brendan M. Looney of CA. Devoted grandfather of Samantha and Nathan Looney of Marshfield. Bob is survived by his siblings Judith Merra of Brockton, Norrine Burnett of Mattapoisett, and Richard Looney of FL, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Donald W. Looney and his sister Gloria McEnteggart.
Bob was born in Brockton, son of the late Robert E. and Albina (Svirsky) Looney and was raised and educated there graduating from Brockton High School in 1960, and later the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1968. Although he lived in Rockland for 36 years he always considered himself a "Brockton Boy." He served diligently on many reunion committees and always attended the impromptu get together's at George's Café.
Mr. Looney served in the U.S. Army before attending college. After earning his college degree he worked as a salesman for several companies. From 1980 until his retirement he served in many capacities with the Mac-Gray Company of Cambridge, providing laundry services to colleges and universities. He was an active, well respected member of many organizations in the industry and travelled widely on company business always managing to include golf matches along the way.
Although illness prevented Bob from attending any Red Sox Games for the past two seasons, he still bought his seasons tickets as he had for 40 years and followed the team religiously. Bob was also an enthusiastic and committed member of the Thorny Lea Golf Course in Brockton, thoroughly enjoying both the game and the friendships he formed there.
A loyal and steadfast friend, Bob will be deeply missed by all who knew him over the past decades and who enjoyed his warmth, wit and sense of humor. He was a true gentleman.
The family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate his life at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St. Rockland on Monday, September 19, 2011 from 5:00-8:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Tuesday September 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to Division of Hematologic Malignancies c/o Dana Farber Cancer Institute 450 Brookline Ave. Boston, MA 02215-5450.

Kathy and Family, My sincere condolences to you. I consider Bob one of the most unique , fun loving, and giving people it has been my pleasure to know. By example - he once gave up his much beloved and sacred Red Sox seats to me for a Yankees game! And he did so even though he knew I am a die hard Yankees fan! It was truely one of the most special experiences of my life. I could not thank him enough. He was loads of fun on the golf course and I will always remember our round in Hawaii where we watched in amazement as an unknown member of our foursome chased wild pigs off the green with his 8 iron! It was as belly laughing great time. That is how I remember Bob. A bright time no matter how grey the day. Bless you all.

For my son's 22nd birthday Bob generously gave us his beloved Red Sox tickets. My son, who was in recovery, was thrilled to have something fun and "innocent" to do to celebrate his birthday. When my son passed away this January (at 25) Bob attended his very crowded memorial service at some risk to his own health. He, Bob, will be missed by so many people that he may not even know how much he affected in a positive way. God Bless you all, his loving family. -Lois McLennan -

Dear Family of Bob, Bob was one of the nicest men ever... caring for others so much. I hadn't seen him for over 40 years, when we ran into each other at his reunion. He was so happy with his life and absolutely delighted in showing a picture of his beautiful grandchildren. He was in remission at the time, so it really was sad to hear that he was so ill again, and finally that he lost his long battle. Bob deserved a much longer life, and you all deserved to share it with him. He loved you all so very much. Please accept my sincere condolences and know that many prayers and kind thoughts are with you.

Cathy, Brendan, Chris and family, I had the pleasure of knowing Bob for 23 years. He hired me at Mac Gray and taught me the business. Bob is a unique man in many ways. His humor, warmth and kindness are all trademarks that set him apart. The memories are countless, but I will always remember Bob talking about Saturday night as DATE night. I never met anyone who loved and respscted and was such great friends with his wife as Bob. He loved his boys dearly as well as his grandchildren and mother in law. He will be deeply missed, but I have no doubt that he is in heaven, playing golf and making someone laugh. ' All of our prayers and love, John Sellier and the boys

Mrs. Looney and family Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Bob was a wonderful and caring friend. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob through NACAS and while I did not do business with MCGRAY he was always gracious and extended dinner invitations. One of my fondest memories is the bus ride from dinner when we were in San diego. During our Ride to the hotel, Bob had the group singing, we had so much FUN!!! I will always remember Bob as a gentleman that he was. His love of fine food and friendship will be sorely miss by those he called friends. Maria West Point

I had the privilege to work with Bob on laundry services for Stonehill College for 15 years, and believe me when I say that Bob's passing is felt throughout colleges and universities across the country. He was a professional, he was competent, and a gentleman and a scholar in his field. We also got to trade stories on golf, koi ponds and plants (though he always deferred the plant discussions to Kathy!) And he continued to reach out with his humor and jokes for the last many years. He will be missed and remembered with joy. He was a person of impact. Hopes and prayers to you folks.

Kathy, Christopher, and Brendan, I loved Bob. He was like a brother. We shared countless good times over the years. Bob loved being with people. He had an amazing sense of humor and loved to make us all laugh regardless if he was with us, or if he was sending us a funny story via email. You will hear others say this about Bob, because it is true... he loved his family. His family meant everything to him. Bob gave me an excellent model for the kind of person, husband, father, and friend I would like to be. Whether he knew it or not, Bob was my idol. He was one of my very best friends. There will never be another one like him. I thank God I was one of Bob Looney's friends.

Bob will be sorely missed. Over the 16+ years I have been a part of higher education auxiliary services, Bob has been a great person to be around. Always ready with a joke, a witty retort, or just a story to share. I found him to be the best of what I know in our industry. I can only imagine the loss you must feel as his family. My condolences on your loss, and my wish for you to remember all of the fabulous times together, I am sure there are many. Read Winkelman Vice President of Sales The CBORD Group, Inc.

Kathy and family, Bob was more than a friend. He shared his wonderful sense of humor and love for the game of golf with this NY Yankees fan and we only found the fun in each time we met. I will always remember the times we shared, the jokes he told and the way he always respected our relationship. In August he took the time to remember my wife's birthday and also took the time to make sure he took a dig at me! I will miss him and may God continue to keep you during this time of your great loss. Ron and Barb Campbell

Kathy, we haven't met, but I had the privilege of getting to know Bob through a business relationship I have with Mac Gray. I was in Bob's presence many times and always looked forward to seeing him at our meetings and the lunches and dinners that followed. There are certain people that you encounter in life that leave a lasting impression. Bob was one of that rare breed of people. Whether he was inquiring about my wife and kids or my business, you always knew Bob had a sincere interest. And of course, there was Bob's sense of humor...always quick to laugh and make the people around him laugh. I have a particular memory of Bob from when he hopped a ride with me back from New York rather than take a train a number of years ago. It was the fastest 4 hours. We never stopped talking...marriage, family, kids, sales...you name it. We covered it all. I am sure you will hear this type of memory of Bob over and over. My sincerest condolences to you and your family. Bob was truly one of a kind. Steve Borseti, Sandler, Inc.

Dear Kathy, I am so sorry and saddened to hear of Bob's passing. I always enjoyed talking with him when he visited RHS, especially about radio and television nostalgia and trivia. He had a keen sense of the media and had the personality to be an "on-air talent" of his own. I will remember him as a great guy and he will be in my thoughts and prayers. May God bless you and your entire family. Steve Budkiewicz

Dear Kathy, Christopher, and Brendan, we have never had the advantage to meet but I worked with Bob at Mac-Gray. As the new Salesman, Bob treated me with patience and respect while I attempted to draw upon his vast knowledge of the Laundry business. Bob had a great sense of humor and this is what I admired the most. Watching him interface with all his friends and colleagues at our Sales meetings was a testament of how everyone felt about Bob. During his stays in the hospital, we would correspond about many issues including old times and sports. He will be truly missed. My deepest sympathies to the entire Looney family and I will keep Bob in my thoughts.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob 12 years ago as a new customer of MacGray. He really showed the meaning of client support and friendship, and often demonstrating that there really is no difference in the two. His support to the NACAS professional association has certainly not gone unnoticed. He was a supporter you can count on. He did all this and did not let his allegiance to the Red Sox get in the way!!!! He will certainly be missed. Sincerely, Bill Guerrero Purchase College, SUNY

Cathy, Christopher & Brendan: Please accept my most sincere condolences for the loss of your husband and father. Bob often spoke of his family with love and emotional pride. The love of his family, his sense of humor and professionalism were the foundation of who he is. I have known Bob for over 20 years. Every meeting, golf outing, dinner, and any occasion was always brighter and a lot more fun with Bob in attendance. My life has been enriched because of my association with Bob. I was fortunate to be the beneficiary of his kindness, we wore the same size shoe and on more than one occasion I would receive a FedEx package out of the blue with a pair of golf shoe courtesy of Bob. He had the respect and admiration of his colleagues, most of whom he considered friends as well. His humor and cheerful disposition was an inspiration to all of those who knew him. I shall never forget this wonderful person. I am honored that Bob called me friend. Sincerely, Mike

Kathy, Christopher and Brendan, I am sorry for your loss. Bob brought so much joy to so many of us. He just loved life. Way back in 1982 he picked me up for lunch for a job interview....thus began decades of laughter, work and fun. He was great energy to be around. He cared about people. His love for those closest to him was just part of who he was. Kathy, the joy and love he had for you was truly special. And, he was so proud of his sons. He spoke and referred to his family in ways that said, “I am blessed to have these people in my life. I consider myself blessed to have known Bob. Cathy McDonald

Kathy, I was so glad to be able to get to Bob's service today and to spend a moment with you. Although Sandy was unable to attend due to her illness we both wish you and your family peace and you will be in our prayers. Joe & Sandy Dolan

Some one asked me once, to name a person who I would have for a mentor. Bob Looney, I said. He was so smart; and so full of life. He always made people feel so special. I would sometimes call him and ask him things that had nothing to do with Mac Gray. I loved getting his thoughts. I really looked up to him.
