Obituary For Reinhilde “Nilla” Baum

Reinhilde “Nilla” Baum (Van den hoff) passed away on March 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Borghorst, Germany on September 24, 1937. Nilla was a bright light, a ray of sunshine, known for her optimism and her loving, kind nature. She was the matriarch of her family, devoting her precious time to her loved ones. Her thoughtfulness and attention to detail touched the lives of many.

Nilla loved attending the many games and activities of her family and never arrived empty handed. She felt a Gatorade and a good piece of German chocolate, or a mint would do the trick! Nilla was a masterful knitter and seamstress, creating beautiful garments for her family to cherish for generations. She loved to read and she astonished her family with her repertoire of classics including her favorites Ayn Rand, Cervantes, Steinbeck and Tolstoy. She enjoyed feeding the birds that visited her kitchen window each day. Nilla had a great faith and was devoted to the prayer of the Rosary which she dedicated to all those she loved.

She is survived and missed by her daughter Stephany and husband Peter Woodward, her son John and wife Anna Baum, her daughter Robin and husband Bob Gasdia along with grandchildren Christopher and wife Amy Woodward, Elizabeth and
husband Andrew McInnes, Ian, Cory, Bobby and wife Maria Gasdia, Brad, Bonnie, Lea and great grandchildren Olivia, Hannah, Frankie and Will. Also, sisters Inge Gozze, Gerda and husband Franz Knuth along with many nieces and nephews. Nilla is preceded in death by her loving husband Johann Baum, her parents Elisabeth and Reinholt, her siblings Marga and Dieter.

A Funeral Mass to celebrate Nilla’s life will be held at Holy Family Church in Rockland, MA on Monday April 8, 2024 at 9:00 AM. Nilla’s legacy of love, creativity, and devotion to her family will forever be cherished and remembered.

My heartfelt sympathy to all of her family and friends. I may have never met her in person, but felt like I knew her through stories from Stephany. If she raised a strong, kind, and wonderful woman like Stephany, then I can only imagine she was one of the best. Thinking of all of you.

Memories shared by my friend Sue Ambrose. ♥️ Please tell your Mom that I love her. Thank her for making me French toast, and bringing me on my first (and only) shopping trip by bus to Boston. Thank her for the yummy chocolate (with fruit)bars and for bringing me to a perfume store uptown. Thank her for her wonderful laugh and joy and giggle. Thank her for bringing me to my first (only) men's soccer game and to a German club in ( I think) Brockton. Thank her for always having yummy cakes. She is the only person I know and love that had specific "indoor shoes"..... dr schools sandals! I always loved her dr schools sandals. I love the way she would run up and down the cellar stairs....like a little bunny. I love the way she would take care of the dogs, trip over them in the kitchen and laugh. I love her laugh. I love how she had your handprints in the concrete near her front steps. I love when she got her license and I think she had a standard car.... We would go for a bit of a wild ride up Durbeck Rd. 🚗🚗🚗I love how she let you draw precious moments on your bedroom wall. I remember when your Dad built his beautiful back porch.... How he loved sitting in the sun. I think there was a pot of geraniums on the porch. I remember a beautiful garden in the back yard..... lots of tomatoes. I always felt loved when I was with her. Thank her for me! Tell her that I love her! Thank her for bringing my best friend into the world. 🩵🩵🌸🩵
