Obituary For Michael F. Keane

Michael F. Keane, Jr. 66 of Hanover died on March 28, 2015 at the Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. He was born in Brockton, son of the late Michael and Marilyn J. (McCarthy) Keane, Sr. and was raised and educated in Rockland. He was a graduate of Holy Family School and Rockland High School with the Class of 1966.

Michael has made his home in Hanover for the past 20 years. He was a world-renowned marine artist. His works are considered to be pre-eminent in the genre. A fine arts painter for over a half-century, Keane's works have been eagerly sought after by astute collectors for many years. His work is so admired and loved that rarely does a piece of it ever come up for resale. Production of Keane's work remains limited, because of the time involved in their creation. Year after year, Keane's work holds its value and steadily appreciates. His paintings remain a lynchpin for that elite group of art collectors who continue to eagerly seek his work.

Michael served an eight year apprenticeship with a noted local landscape painter, Edward Harrigan- starting at the ripe old age of 8! From there, he served a four-year apprenticeship with noted marine artist Marshall W. Joyce. After that, he studied for four years -and then taught- portraiture and figure painting with Clemente Micarelli in his studio. Michael Keane majored in Visual Design at UMass, and afterward taught painting for 17 years. All the while, he continued his own personal fine arts career as a marine artist.

Mr. Keane's fine artwork first achieved national status during the 1980's, when his paintings were 'discovered' by several art collectors. He was soon catapulted into the limelight, and his painting subject and style subsequently became the benchmark for a whole following of marine artists. His work has achieved awards and international fame, and his rare skills have also warranted many feature magazine articles written about Mr. Keane and his work.

Truly a Renaissance man, with many talents and interests. He was a skilled sailor. Michael also has the unique qualifications, depth and technical knowledge that was garnered from serving nearly seven years as a Marine Quality Assurance Inspector, while working alongside the U.S. Coast Guard and the American Bureau of Shipping.

A vintage automotive enthusiast, and an historian, designer, builder and gardener. Michael was a member of the ROMEOS Car Club and the South Shore Corvette Club.

He is survived by his wife, Christine (Chandler) Keane, a son, Michael L Keane, II and his wife Abigail of Brockton. His precious grandchildren, Finnegan A. and Eamon A. Keane and his siblings, Maureen A. Glynn of Hanover, Diane M. Mincone of Rockland, Gary L. Keane of Carver and Robert D. Keane of Sagamore. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Keane family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate his life on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St. Rockland, MA from 4:00-8:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Wednesday April 1, 2015 at 11:00 AM in Holy Family Church. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to Holy Family School, 403 Union St. Rockland, MA

I felt honored to be a student in Michael's studio. He was a master way back in the '80's. His approach to painting catboats and ships was way over the top.......multiple studies, scale models, oil sketches and his final work of art. Michael, we were calling you the next "Stobart" back then. Thank you for sharing your artistic talent with me. You will never be forgotten. "Running Home". Karen Dalecki

Michael came up in conversation with an old friend the other day so i happened to google him wondering where he was and what he was doing. I was sad to see he had passed away. He and his gracious wife , a nurse, were tenants in my dads house and we lived a floor below. Michael and my dad both worked at Quincy shipyard at the time. I remember visiting him and seeing him painting and was amazed. They were good neighbors and tenets. Michael's kind soul emanated effortlessly from him. My younger brother became interested in painting and took some lessons from him. Eventually they saved enough to buy / build a house and i only saw him once after that while my brother stayed in contact. I learned of Michael's success with his artwork and was happy for them. He was a nice person and a kind soul. Rest in peace friend. David Barrows

Our lives will never be the same again. His talent and wisdom was unsurpassed. I will miss so much the impromptu dinners and cookouts we had over the years and all the times we laughed so hard. You were always there for all of us and especially in the tough times. You were the best brother in the world. We all love you very much and know you are at peace in God's care now. Your little sister, Diane

Michael, Thank you for sharing with the world, through your brush, what you saw through your wonderfully talented eyes. You always said it was a passion, but I know it was also a lot of hard work. You leave behind a loving family, magnificent pieces of art, endless admirers....and a piece of history. We love you and will always remember you through the paintings on our walls. Our heart goes out to Chris and all of your family.

" I first became aquainted with Michael when he was a student at Rockland High School. After graduating in 1966 and persuing a career in the Arts he was inducted into the RHS Academic Hall of Fame in 1988. Most recently, I have had a great pleasure of meeting with Michael and seeking his help to improve the Art programs in the Rockland Public Schools. In November of 2012 Michael took part in a Painting/Lecture Demonstration with the Rockland Education Foundation. The Foundation with the proceeds established a $15,000 MK Grant to help improve the Arts programs in the schools. Most recently, a 3D Design camera was purchased for the high school. Michael was very proud of his home town and we shared many times reminising. He was very generous with his time and always made me feel welcome in his home/studio. I shall miss the times we spent talking about sailing and the locations of his paintings. I am pleased that I have a number of his works in my home which will be a most plesent reminder of our relationship. Michael is truly the " Master Marine Artist", but most of all he was a "Good Guy". My deepest sympathy to Chris and the family.

  • 05/25/2021

Mike, There are just so many words spoken and unspoken. I don't know where to begin. So I'll just say that you looked out for me as a kid, and occasionally on my adult life. I learned a great deal from you. I never took any of your wisdom for granted. Tell everyone up there I said Hi, and watch over us. You Kid Brother, Bob.

I felt honored to be one of Mike's email buddies and enjoyed his friendship, time and insights more than I can say. He always took the time to edit an article, offer an insight, another perspective and always a laugh. His faith in God was the source, he said to all his blessings. When I was four year old - Mike took the time to teach a stupid little kid (me) how to ride a 21" inch bike. I can still see his smile. The same smile I saw a couple of years ago when he handed me the keys to his beloved Corvettes and told me to take my son for a ride. My son Truman still talks about the ride I gave his as well the "real ride" Mike provided - with a little more gusto. Mike was not perfect, but he was a perfectionist. Whatever he did - he did it to the best of his ability...even as a kid with a butterfly collection, it was the best. he was the best and we will miss him.

I knew Mike since the early 60's. We were always tinkering with cars that went fast but couldn't stop. Even as the years passed and he became successful we stayed in touch and frequently got together for coffee and guy talk. My wife said every time he showed up at our house in his Corvette we turned into teenagers. That's a good memory to have.

  • 05/25/2021

My husband and I were away at the time of Michael's death. I was saddened to return home to hear of his passing, I can only hope he and my Father are reminiscing about the many good times they had together. Dad loved and respected Michael as a friend and as an artist. He did a portrait of Dad which is spectacular. Today it hangs in my home. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Although she is gone Mike and my mother had a strange bond, he came and saw her often and never forgot her at Christmas. Thank you Michael for being such a good friend to your aunt Katie. I will miss our chats about cars, they started back in the 60's. You have left us at an early age, the big "Guy" must need you. Jim.

Mike - You done good for a kid who graduated with a "D" in art from RHS! You set an example I have always and will always admire!

  • 05/25/2021

I just today learned of Mike's passing and want to extend my most sincere sympathies to his family. Mike introduced himself to me several years ago at car show we were both participating in, and have always looked forward to seeing and talking with him at these events since then. I think his passing will hit me the hardest as I listen for the Merlin coming down route 53 on summertime Wednesday nights and realize it will not be happening any more. The art and car world has lost a good one. RIP Michael, we will miss you.
