Obituary For Maureen D. Sharkey
Mrs. Maureen Denise (Martin) Sharkey, 85, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2024, surrounded by loved ones and cared for by the wonderful staff at the Lifecare Center in West Bridgewater.
Maureen was born on September 29, 1938, in Somerville, Massachusetts, to the late Robert and Mary (Mulcahy) Martin. Growing up in Medford, she enjoyed her childhood with her extended family, cousins and late siblings, Bobby Martin, Donald Martin, and Judy Farr.
Maureen graduated from St. Clement’s School in Somerville and it was there that Maureen would marry the love of her life, Bob Sharkey, on November 28, 1959. The pair ultimately settled in the suburb of Rockland, where they built their life and family with their two daughters, Colleen and Lisa.
A woman of immense resilience, Maureen would take the lead in holding her family together upon the untimely passing of her husband Bob, on March 3, 1988. She would go on to play a pivotal role in supporting her daughters’ families and helping to raise her seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was very involved in each one of her grandchildren’s lives, all of whom will sorely miss their beloved “Nana.” In addition, Maureen's steadfast friendships with lifelong companions, the late Barbara Dwyer and Ruth Pinkham, provided unwavering support, forming a resolute bond that helped her navigate widowhood, raise her family, and create a tapestry of cherished memories.
Maureen’s enduring love for her family served as a testament to her legacy as family matriarch and illustrates just how monumental the toll of loss is upon the hearts of those that love her. Her memory will live on through the enduring mark she left on this world, her children, Colleen Marble and her husband Tom, Lisa Lydon and her husband Michael; grandchildren Melissa DeLong (Matt), Kristyn Cox (Dan), Tommy Marble, Ann Marie DeLong (Nate), Bobby Lydon (Erin), Erica Hoitt (Nick), Andrew Lydon and ten great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held at Magoun Biggins Funeral Home in Rockland on Friday, March 8 at 11:00 am with a prayer service at 12:30 pm. A luncheon at Rockland Golf Course will immediately follow in which all are welcome. A private burial will take place at a later date at Massachusetts National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband.
