Obituary For Mason B. Cook

Mason Briggs Cook lost his battle to cancer on Sept 6, 2024 at his home in Halifax, MA. He was 54 years old.

Mason leaves behind his wife Monica Mueller, sons Spencer Cook and Harrison Cook, mother Justine West Cook Huntley, brother Jason Cook and his wife Lori Cook, sister Bailey Cook and husband David Stuckey, and two half siblings Cynthia Head and Paul Cook, mother-in-law Edeltraud Mueller and sister-in-law Caroline Hall.

Mason graduated from Worcester Academy and then followed his passion for history by attending Mary Washington College in VA where he earned a degree in historic preservation. At college Mason met his wife Monica Mueller and in 2002 they moved to Halifax to build a life together.

Mason’s love of history was sparked by his early adventures with his mother buying and selling antiques. He took great pride in his business Westmill Preservation by working to protect, preserve, and restore many historical buildings throughout New England. He was not a traditional church goer but was quick to point out that he spent more time in churches than most. To name just a few he worked on Boston’s Old North Church, The First Church of Plymouth, First Parish Kingston, Cohasset’s First Parish, and Pembroke’s Quaker Meetinghouse which had a particular importance in his own family history. Mason served on the Historical Commission in Halifax and was a trustee of the Quaker Meetinghouse in Pembroke. He was proud to be a descendant of several Mayflower passengers including William Bradford, William Brewster and John Alden.

When not working he could be found tending to his garden, walking the beach, or playing cribbage with friends. As a young boy Mason spent summers at The Eel River Beach Club where he made life long friends and memories. Plymouth beach was always a place of peace and solace, particularly during the past few years.

Mason took great pride in his twins Spencer and Harry and was heartbroken when he realized he would not be here to support them as they grow into adulthood. Mason lost his father at a young age and was all too aware of the impact. He was grateful for all that his wife, children, family, and friends did to support him during his fight with cancer.

When you see and hear the ocean, think of Mason’s love of the beach. When you see a beautiful daylily blooming, smile as you recall his love of gardening. When you admire a historical building, recall his love of history and when you see his handsome boys, know his love for them was boundless.

Visiting hours will be Saturday Sept. 14 at Magoun Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St., Rockland, MA from 4:00-7:00 p.m. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in Mason’s memory earmarked for The Quaker Meetinghouse may be sent to the Pembroke Historical Society, 116 Center St., PO Box 122, Pembroke, MA 02359.

Mason's passion for preservation ran deep. I studied Historic Preservation with Mason and was around when Monica and Mason first began dating. Magical moments in Fredericksburg. Monica, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Mason was someone who cut through the crap and saw the world for what is really was... Gina Haney
