Mary Margaret (Heney) Larkin, 96, of Bridgewater died at Massachusetts General Hospital onJanuary 11, 2017. Mary was born in Brockton to John and Nellie (Byrnes) Heney on May 1,1920. She was the loving wife of the late Robert R. Larkin. Mary was raised and educated in Brockton and was a graduate of Brockton High School (where she met her future husband at age 14 while standing in line for the classroom pencil sharpener). She graduated in 1942 from the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing and had a long career as a Registered Nurse.

Mary was a proud veteran of the United States Army, where she was a nurse and attained the rank of Lieutenant during World War II. Gifted with an extraordinary sense of compassion, she devoted her career to psychiatric nursing, caring for society's most vulnerable. She was a registered nurse for the Brockton Veterans Hospital and an active member of the MGH Alumnae Association. Mary was known for her graciousness and adored her family more than anything. She was proud of her Irish Catholic heritage, curious about other people's lives and cultures, and open to all viewpoints and perspectives. She had a strong sense of adventure and loved to exercise her keen mind talking politics and medicine. Mary will forever be remembered and admired for her inner strength, resilience and unique gift of healing.

Mary was loving mother to Nancy Henderson of Bridgewater, Valerie Larkin and partner David Benzaquin of Kingston, Alison Larkin-Koushki and her late husband Parviz Koushki of Kuwait, and Mary Larkin and husband Peter Golemme of Hanover. She is predeceased by her parents and her late siblings, John Heney, Robert Heney, Katherine Kianski, Eleanor Doody, Elizabeth Danahy and Jospeh Heney. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Amie, Michael, Rachel, Alexa, John, Katrin, Jasmine and Amir, her great grandchildren, Luke, Skye and Dakota, and her many cherished nieces and nephews.

I will continue to celebrate the wonderful, rich life "Mama" Larkin lived! She loved everyone, never judging, just enjoying every moment of her life. Her daughters and grandchildren were taught about life by the best!

Mrs. Larkin will always be in the "Best Mom Ever" category for taking Mary and me to see the Beatles in Boston (1966). Not only did she subject herself to the concert filled with screaming 12-year olds, but she allowed us to go to watch them arrive on their plane at the airport. I send my love to all the family at this sad time.

Oh Nana..and to Dakota, Great Nana. I find myself having a running conversation with you in my head, as if we were talking on the phone. This last week your daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren came together to honor you, remember you, share stories, laughs and tears. It was quite remarkable. All of us filling in pieces of the stories of our lives that had one thing in common, you. We all had a unique connection with you. All of us spending time with you during different periods of our lives. But no matter when, where or how, you were there for all of us.

Dakota will have fond memories being at 75, and for that I am grateful. Lindor chocolates always out on the side table, carvel ice cream cake, and those pizzas... But the one thing he will always take with him... every night since he was there in the summer of 2013, we say "Good Night Irene" and "I'll leave you dirty". Every night.

You will always be with us, Nana. We love you. We miss you already. XOXO Kate, Pete and Dakota

My sincere condolences to your family. May God "who comforts us in all our trials" (2 Cor 1:4) comfort you and your family at such a difficult time. I know God will help you to endure because he cares for you (1Peter 5 :7).

I believe that I knew your family many years ago in West Bridgewater before you moved to Norwell. Valerie and I were childhood friends and neighbors there and also at the beach. My condolences to your family.

I worked with Mary at the VA hospital in the 70s-80s. She was one of the kindest and caring people I have ever met. Sorry we lost touch, but she will remain in my prayers.

Mary was like a diamond she reflected beautiful bright light with her presence. I had a very special place in my heart. I remember her great sense of humor and her loving acceptance of everyone. Happy trails to Mary.

Mary. The matriarch of the Heney lineage. She watched over her siblings children as they all departed this life and made sure we, the Kids, were alright. She was so mentally sharp it amazed me. She always remembered to the last conversation she had with you and could continue it months later without skipping a beat. I will miss my beautiful aunt with all my heart but will take solice in knowing she is with her beloved family waiting for our arrival some day. Until then, God bless her family.
