Obituary For Martin E. Morrill
Martin Edward Morrill Jr. of Duxbury, long time resident of Norwell, died on May 31, 2018. He was born on January 15, 1937 in Boston to the late Martin Sr. and Isabel (Black) Morrill. He was the loving husband of Patricia (Ellis) Morrill and former husband of the late Mary Joyce Morrill.
Martin was a proud service member of the United States Army, serving as a Paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division. He later worked many years as a Comptroller for Good Brothers Ford (Randolph) and Dodge (Weymouth). He was a member of Chabad of Cape Cod and an inner circle member of the Quarterdeck of Falmouth.
He will always be remembered for being a sports enthusiast. Martin's generosity was unmatched. He was a wonderful husband who loved his family very much. Along with his wife Patricia, Martin will be dearly missed by his children Martin Morrill and his wife Paula Passmore, Ann Marie (Morrill) Baxter, Joseph Ellis, James Morrill and his wife Wanda Morris, Jeanne Ellis, Christine (Morrill) Gauthier, Patricia (Morrill) Bevilacqua, Michael Ellis and his wife Christine, Julie Morrill, Andrea (Morrill) Pongratz and her husband George, Caitlin (Morrill) White and her husband Austin, Adam (AJ) Morrill and the late Daniel Ellis. Martin was the loving grandfather to 36 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Martin leaves behind a long legacy of helping people and organizations, in particular the Norwell Youth Sports programs. He coached Norwell Little League from 1968 until the late - 90's. He coached all of the baseball players from the 1976 Norwell High State Baseball Champions in Little League, Babe Ruth and various All Star teams. He was the co-founder of Pop Warner Football in Norwell, having started up by personally buying all of the equipment. His kids slowly converted him from Youth Football to Youth Soccer, where he coached as well. He coached rec basketball and later his son AJ in a very successful AAU team. When Bobby Orr and the big bad Bruins were marauding the NHL, Martin and some other Hockey Nut Dads built an Outdoor Hockey Rink behind St. Helens. He himself played Goaltender in a local league and bought one of the first Goalie Masks after breaking his nose numerous times. He played Softball for many years for the St. Helens team, and later played with his sons into his late-50's in Norwell Softball, including the infamous "Blue Team" that went undefeated for three years running.
In his later years, he enjoyed nothing more so than watching his Grandchildren in sporting events, and he attended hundreds of games, matches and track meets.
What many people experienced over the years, was his generosity, and most of this was done anonymously. For years he donated 10% to various religious organizations, and friends and family were the recipients of kind gestures to help them through hard times.
Funeral Services for Martin will be held privately. A celebration of his life and legacy will be held on June 24, a BBQ Picnic and Softball Game. Details will be posted on Social Media. In lieu of flowers, Donations in his name can be made to Norwell Little League (PO Box 468, Norwell, MA 02061), or Chabad Lubavitch of Cape Cod (745 West Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601) or the Temple Institute (templeinstitute.org).
