Obituary For Margaret A Demers

Margaret A. Demers (Rafferty) passed away quietly on Thursday, December 26 at the Queen Anne Nursing Home in Hingham. She'd just made it past her 97th birthday, which was on December 24.

Margaret – better known as Peg – was born in Boston in 1922. She attended Catholic grammar and high schools in the Boston area where, according to her siblings, she was an excellent student. Peg enlisted in the Unites States Navy at the start of World War II, and served as a pharmacist assistant in San Diego during the war. Post-service, she worked in physical therapy before attending Boston College on the GI Bill.

She married George H. Demers of Lynn, MA in 1958; they had met as students while at Boston College. They had their first two children while residing in Boston, and moved to Rockland in 1963, where their third child was born. They lived there together until George's death in 2001; Peg continued living there until 2017, at which time she became a resident at the Queen Anne Nursing Home.

Three things were most important to Peg: commitment to her family, her strong Catholic faith, and her dedication to teaching. She had been a teacher at the Holy Family School in Rockland for nearly thirty years – she said that teaching children is what kept her feeling young.

Peg is pre-deceased by her husband, George Demers. Among her immediate family, she is survived by her oldest son Marc Demers and his wife Amy of Winter Park, FL; second son Gregory Demers of Foster City, CA; third son Christopher Demers of Abington, MA; and grandchildren Sarah Demers and Hugh Demers, both of Boston, MA.

The Demers family welcomes family and friends to join them in celebrating Peg's life on Thursday, January 2 from 4:00-6:00pm at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home in Rockland, MA. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 3 at 9:00am at the Holy Family Church in Rockland. Burial will follow at the Holy Family Cemetery in Rockland.

It will be difficult to say this final goodbye to Auntie Peggy, my godmother. She always greeted me with a smile, kiss on the check, and a holding of hands. She spoke my name "Francie" like no other person. I can hear her in my memory, such a distinctive voice. She and Uncle George were an integral part of my upbringing sharing their love and lives with my parents and all of my siblings. I will miss you Auntie.

I was asked tonight at Peg's wake how I knew Peg? Was I one of her students? The answer was no...sort of! As a fallen away Catholic I returned to Holy Family Church 15 years ago. My schedule at the time permitted me to attend weekday masses and at the urging of Fr. Jim Hickey I decided I would. He doubled down and suggested I go a half hour 45 mins early and have some quiet time to pray. I entered the upper church and hesitantly sat halfway up the center right isle. A couple of seconds later a woman a few pews up on the left looked over her right shoulder, smiled and said "hi, my name is Peg"! I said "hi, my name is Bob". With that warm smile I knew instinctively it would be inappropriate to just wave. I crossed the isle and shook her hand. She then said "we pray the rosary before mass, would you like to join us"? Again, instinctively I knew you couldn't say no to such a sweet lady so I said yes, but I don't remember how to pray the rosary. She said you'll just follow along with us and you will pick it up fast! Within minutes the regulars of the group were entering and one by one I was being introduced by Peg as "this is my friend Bob, he's going to pray the rosary with us today"! The first person was Clare Maher who said welcome and I said along with my previous disqualification; "well I don't have rosary beads". Clare immediately pulled out a set she said came from Medjugorje and were blessed by the Blessed Mother! My work schedule changed and I couldn't attend daily mass and the rosary group anymore. But, every chance I had I would return. The very long answer here to Christopher's question tonight is no, I was not one of Peg's students. But, what she taught me about faith, compassion, dignity and grace cannot be learned without seeing it lived out. Peg did that throughout her long life and I along with countless others are all richer in this life to have been touched by her.
Rest in peace Peg, "your friend", Bob Byrne
