Obituary For Louisa M. Petrell

Louisa M. (Cox) Petrell, of Hanover died March 18, 2007 at the Norwell Knoll Nursing Home after a brief period of failing health. Born in Holbrook, MA on December 21,1912 the daughter of John and Melinda (Inglis) Cox Louisa grew up and was educated in Hanover graduating from the former Sylvester High School. On June 25, 1933 Mrs. Petrell married her late husband, Frank P. Petrell, and lived in Rockland for a short period before they moved to Abington where they made their home while raising their daughters. Mr. Petrell managed and owned the former Reed Lumber Company in Abington. They lived in Hanover from 1965-1970 when they moved to the Halifax Mobile Home Estates in Halifax prior to Mrs. Petrell returning to her native Hanover in 1982 where she resided until her death. A former employee of the Alamo restaurant and New England Art in Abington, she worked for most of her career in the retail clothing industry most notably Filenes in the South Shore Plaza and Touraine Women's Clothing until her retirement in 1977. She loved to travel with a long time friend, Iva Caruso, having visited many corners of the world including Russia, Turkey, Thailand, North Africa, and many other exotic locations. They also cruised extensively including the Greek Islands and the Caribbean, Alaska, and Hawaii. Mrs. Petrell loved crafts including sewing, knitting, crocheting, rug braiding, and quilting. She enjoyed her flowers particularly her roses and clematis vines she had planted at the Hanover Legion Senior Housing where she had spent the last 25 years of her life having been one of the first tenants of the newly constructed complex. She could be seen regularly riding around the Legion Housing on her scooter visiting the gardens and her many friends. She was a member of St. Mary's Church and sang in the choir. Louisa golfed and bowled well into her 80's and was a member of the Rockland Golf Course Womens Golf League and the Hanover Senior Bowling League. She was a regular bingo and card player and an avid reader switching to books on tape when her eyesight began to fail. Mrs. Petrell leaves her daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret A. and Richard E. Harris of FL and Frances and Norman J. MacDonald of Hanover; a granddaughter, Christina L. Viscardi and grandson, Richard E. Harris, Jr. both of FL; 1 great grandchild and 2 great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a brother, Harold E. Cox of Hanover and a sister, Mabel E. Meserve of Whitman. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, April 20th in St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church in Hanover. Burial followed in Holy Family Cemetery in Rockland.
