Obituary For Joseph E. Murphy
Joseph E. Murphy, 84 of Abington, formerly of Rockland died peacefully at his daughters home surrounded by his children on Sunday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in the Mission Hill section of Boston, son of the late Michael J. and Catherine (Lynch) Murphy and was raised and educated there. Joe was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. Joe retired in 1980 after a 33 year career as an operator for the MBTA (formerly the MTA). He was a member for over 60 years of Carmen's Local #589, the Carmen's Post 3403 of the VFW the Rockland Council #165 of the Knights of Columbus and the Friends of Bill W. A "Murphy or Friends" gathering wasn't complete without Joe playing some tunes on his accordion for all to enjoy. If you were a friend of Joe's and had a birthday, you could expect to come home and have a cheery version of "Happy Birthday" on your answering machine. He was known to do impromptu concerts just about anywhere, his very last being at the Commonwealth Oncology Center, the alarms went off and everyone had to evacuate-while still attached to his chemo drip, Joe put on a concert for all to enjoy who were forced outside to stand in the blazing sun. On top of his heritage and music, Joe's greatest pride was his friends, family and especially his nine beautiful grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Pam Murphy, Stephen Murphy and his wife Gail of Rockland, Kim Murphy of Abington, Christine Murphy of Duxbury, Danny Murphy and his wife Lyn of Norwell, Tommy Murphy and his wife Marilyn of Hanover. He was the brother of Jimmy Murphy and his wife Mary of Kennybunk, Maine and the late George, Frank, Jenny (Murphy) McGinty, Mary (Murphy) Vale and Margaret Murphy. Also survived by his grandchildren; Katie Marley; Tyler, Alexa, Ashley, Hannah and Madison Murphy; Ross and Derek Desciscio and Ryan Murphy and many nieces and nephews. A funeral was held from The Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. ROCKLAND on Thursday, October 25th at 8:00 AM. A Funeral Mass followed in St.Bridget's Church in Abington at 9:00 AM. Burial was in Holy Family Cemetery in Rockland. Calling hours were on Wednesday, October 24th from 5-8 PM. Donations may be made to Fr. Bill's Place, 38 Broad St. Quincy, MA. 02169

Dad: Well another milestone has come and gone - your one year anniversary. We thought about how you would want us to honor you and decided to go to Martins! We know how much you loved that place and how very good they were to you. We had a private party there last night with Fred and Sue and all of us. The only thing missing was the squeezebox! The kids had a great time - eating pancakes for supper or whatever else they wanted. Ashley even got to be the dessert waitress and she did a fine job! It was a happy time for your grandkids - your real little "Pride and Joys". We miss you and think about you every day. We know you are smiling down on us and guiding us along the way. Love you Dad! Well Joe, Here I sit with my eyes full and my heart beating hard. It is the eve of your birthday and I find it hard to go on without you. I know time heals all pain but I feel as though it was an hour ago when I held your hand during your last breath and kissed you goodbye. I want to tell you how much you are missing out on the good times we are having, but I know where ever you are you can feel them and your foot is tapping away. I saw it coming a long time ago,but you have no idea how much your sguezzebox is missed. One of the kids plays with the toy one we have and it brings me to my knees. I know your time had come but I wish you were here to see how much you are missed. I also know you would call Uncle Jimmy once in awhile just to say hello. I took that over for you. He is doing ok. I am having a rough go of it tonight knowing you will not be here tomorrow. You can bet your ass I will be playing some good Irish music and tapping my foot tomorrow trying to make the pain go away. Thankyou for all you have done and I love you more then life itself............... I love you Dad, Thomas Edward

Hi Joe I am sure you liked that game tonight - glad that you are watching it from a much better place. First instinct it to call you to talk about it, but we can't do that anymore so I decided to write here. We are all doing good - of course we all miss you so very much. But we get peace in knowing that you are not suffering and that you are where you deserve to be. You would be so proud of everyone and how they are holding up - you worried so much for nothing. You made us strong Dad. We have all those beautiful kids to keep us going - Shannon was a blessing from above - I'm sorry you did not get to see how beautiful she is. We are still working on someone to learn the squeezebox - but believe it it or not - I think Gailarama might pick it up - of course we will make her practice on her grandmothers first! Dad we love you more and more everyday - it has been 3 months but it seems like forever! Peace and Love, Patricia Ann

Dear Pam, Kim, Christine, Danny, Tommy, Stephen, Gayle, Lyn, & Marilyn: As you all know your dad was so very special to me. He may have technically been my "Great Uncle" but I always considered him my third grandpa. He brought such joy to everyone he touched. And you all brought him such joy throughout his life!! Your dad was one of the most fun-loving, caring, and funny people I have ever met, and he was who he was largely because of all of you. Some of my (and Matt's) favorite memories of living in Boston involve your dad and your entire family. I will miss "Uncle Joe" so much, but I will carry those memories, your dad's laugh, and his accordian playing with my always. I am thinking of you all so much. I am sorry I can't make it up to Rockland to celebrate your dad's life with you. Love to you all! ~Kristen

Our hearts go out to the entire family. We only new your dad for a few years and after getting to know him we wish it was a lot longer. He always had a smile on his face and a joke on his tounge ready to tell. We know the picture in his wallet of his pride & joy was a long running joke, but you all know that his family was his pride & joy and everything to him. To all the Murphy family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. We will miss him dearly.

Dear Pam I don't even know where to begin or what to say but what I do know is that put your heart and soul into caring for your Dad and made his last days the best that they could be. Be proud of what you have done and know that your Dad would be proud too. The last few months have not been easy but hopefully the love of your family and friends that surround you will help to ease the pain. Keep your chin up and know that I am always here for you. Love never dies but remains in your heart forever. Keep the happy memories close to your heart and smile whenever you think of the good times with your Dad. My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Christine and your family. Love - Lisa & Larry

To the Murphy Family, We are so saddened by the passing of your Dad. He would come into the "Laundri Centre" often and always be so friendly, witty, and kind. As he waited for his laundry to be done, he would be outside "shining" his car. He said that was the way to keep your car looking brand new and, he was right! His car was beautiful!! Our prayers and thoughts are with Mr. Murphy and his family. He was a great guy and he will be missed by all who knew him. My God Bless you all. Employees and "his friends" at the "Laundri Centre"
