Obituary For John B Cookson

COOKSON, JOHN BURTON May 17, 1935 – October 10, 2019 I Age 84 John B. Cookson Jr. of Hanson, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of October 10, 2019. John was the devoted husband to his beloved wife Helen for 64 years. Son of the late John Burton Cookson and Martha Simmons Cookson. Father to son John B. Cookson III and his wife Kathy of Hanson, daughter Cynthia Cookson and her companion Bobbio Sallaway of Braintree, and daughter Vicki Cookson and her fiancé William Metcalf of Hanson. Grandfather to Jeffery Bowman (Tammy), Janel Smith (John), Mathew Rabinovitz (Jess), and John Cookson IV. Brother to Janet Hobill and her husband Norman of Pembroke. Survived by his many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. Welcomed to heaven by his grandson Sean Bowman along with many siblings. John was born and raised in Rockland, Massachusetts before moving to Hanson where he resided for the past 64 years with his wife Helen. John and Helen were a beautiful example of the unconditional love between husband and wife. John served in the United States Army which included a tour during the Korean War. John worked at HH Arnold until retirement upon which he consulted at GEM in Hanover, MA. John wore many hats over the years including a position as the Board Director for the Hanson Athletic Association, a member of the Model T Club, a Cub Scout Leader, a baseball coach for eight years his son's team, a volunteer lieutenant firefighter for the Hanson Fire Department, and a Mason of the Wampatuck Lodge. John was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Hanson including pie making with the youth group and involvement with the men's supper. When John wasn't in his backyard or barn playing on his tractor or working on a project, he was enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He especially loved spending his free time at his Cottage on Cape Cod. John loved camping in the converted bread truck and dancing to Bad Bad Lee Roy Brown with his bride. John had a love for life and Elvis. He started his day with a cup of coffee and songs of praise and would end it holding Helen's hand and saying, "We did good, Helen." He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus. Psalm 23 was his favorite Scripture passage- especially in his last hours. As we say goodbye to John, we hear the words of our Lord: "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21). A Celebration of Life for John will be Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the First Congregational Church, 639 High Street, in Hanson at Noon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's honor to the Maids & Matrons of the First Congregational Church, 639 High Street, Hanson, MA, 02341. To all of the Cookson family. Please accept our condolences. We feel that even though you aren't related that you all are part of our family too. John has been friends with the Tildens for many years. He was a wonderful guy as you all know. He always loved to talk about you all! I only hope Rusty was waiting for him on the other side ringing the cowbell like they did during camping trips! Please let us know if we can do anything.
