Obituary For Janet Hickey

Janet Hickey, age 69, of Norwell, left this world peacefully in the comfort of her home and surrounded by the loving care and affection of her family, on June 15th, 2018. Through her ministries at both Holy Family Church in Rockland and The Church of the Resurrection in Hingham, Janet lived her life as a devout Catholic and demonstrated her passion for Faith with all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Born in 1948 to the late Edwin Soul and the late Anna (Murray) Soul, Janet was raised and educated in Weymouth, MA, where she graduated from Weymouth High School in 1966. Janet was a lover of all people, but there is no greater love than the one she shared with her husband, Eugene D. Hickey. Janet and Gene were married in 1974 and together moved to Norwell in 1977. They cultivated a loving, committed marriage and were proud to raise 3 children together. Janet's first vocation was as a wife and mother, and she was the most exemplary, dutiful example of each. She was a true friend, partner and confidante to her spouse, and she was a loving mom, role model and patient teacher to her children and grandchildren. Above all, she demonstrated love and dedication to her family at every opportunity. Janet was an active member of Rockland's Holy Family Parish for many years. She dedicated her life to sharing God's Good News and played an integral role in Holy Family's RCIA (Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults) program, profoundly touching the lives of many people as she shared her faith in Jesus Christ our Savior and introduced them into the fellowship of the Catholic Church. Janet cherished her role in the RCIA program and made many lifelong connections and dear friends through her time there. For more than 20 years, Janet has also served as the Director of Religious Education for The Church of the Resurrection Parish in Hingham, MA. She was passionate about introducing children to the sacraments and strove to make them accessible and relatable to support their lifelong relationship with God. Her final and most rewarding vocation was as a grandmother and it was a role she embraced fully and without reservation. She often remarked that they were her greatest reward. Janet was a woman of dignity and grace, and will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Gene Hickey, and her children: Kevin M. Hickey of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Kara L. Wilson and her husband Jeff of Alexandria, VA and Katelyn M. Darling and her husband Jay, of Brockton, MA. Janet was loving "Nannie" to her five grandchildren, Lili, Dylan, Gabby, Jackson and Paige. Janet is survived, loved, and missed by her sister, Anne Striano and husband Alan, her brother Edwin Soul and wife Patricia, and many beloved nieces and nephews. The Hickey Family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate her life on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union Street, Rockland from 5:00–8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, in Holy Family Church in Rockland at 9:00 AM. Burial will follow at Holy Family Cemetery.

    Gene and Family
I'm truly sorry to read about Janet's passing this morning. Yesterday I was on an afternoon drive with my wife, Gloria, and I felt compelled to drive by your home in Norwel to remines about the great EOYP's we had there. You and Janet were such great hosts. Something drew us there,. I think I now know why! God acts in strange ways. Our prayers are with youand your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Janet was a blessing to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. My grief overcame me at her wake. I'm sorry I could not express how much she meant to me. However I wanted to share my 5 yr olds wisdom. When I got home from her wake, she said I looked so sad. I told her I was sad because I couldn't talk to my friend Janet anymore. My daughter told me that I could talk to God anytime and He will tell her. That is a testament to Janet's life and belief. She prayed for my daughter on the day I was in labor. Janet truly had the ear of God. And in the words of Janet, I will say "God is good always. Always God is good". Amen

Gene, When there is love, any life is too short. Bereavement is so personal that few of us unless we have experienced it ourselves, can comprehend its grief. My thoughts, sympathy, and prayers are with you and your family. Sincerely, Gerry Bova SSVT

My favorite memory of Janet is from March of this year. There was a power outage that Saturday, but our men's prayer group meets"no matter what". So in the dark, with a parka to protect her from the cold,Janet, with benefit of a gas stove made Gene's friends bacon.I remember thinking as I awaited my rasher," I'm being served by an angel".

Our deepest sympathies to you all. Although we only knew her for a short time, Janet was a beautiful, kind and fun lady. One of my favorite memories was watching her and Gene dancing up a storm on the dock at the club. She will be missed by many. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

In the words of Sirach 6:14-17. "A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance his worth. A faithful friend is a life-saving remedy, such as he who fears God finds; For he who fears God behaves accordingly, and his friend will be like himself."
Janet was truly this friend for me, and I would imagine for others. Her walk through life captures the essence of what God is. God is always love. Janet truly loved as God loves.
Janet will be missed beyond words, but if we truly believe she can be felt in the gentle breeze as the sunset fades over the ocean.
Love and prayers for all who mourn this remarkable lady.

Dear Gene, Kevin, Kara and Kate, Peace & Love to you all. It is impossible for me to find the words to adequately express my condolences, sympathy and love for Janet and to each of you. Janet has meant so much to me for so long. I pray that you all can take solace and find comfort in knowing Janet is sharing her love for our God face to face with Him. She did so much for so many. I think of how many times she shared her story of the deep, personal and intimate relationship with Jesus that developed in her and led her passion to share that love with so many others. She truly was a fisher of people. Thank you all for your generous sharing of this beautiful, loving and caring lady. God bless you all. Peace & Love, Bob & Susan.
