Obituary For Gregory Burgess

Gregory Burgess Sr. passed away on 5/2/22 at age 87 surrounded by his loving family. Greg was born on 10/30/1934 in Boston to Joseph Burgess and Miriam (Murphy) Burgess. He graduated from Dorchester High School. After that, he served in the U.S. Marine Corp, where he achieved the rank of corporal, and was honorably discharged in 1958. He returned to Boston to marry the love of his life, the late Helen (Fitzgerald) Burgess on July 11th, 1959. They were happily married for 53 years. The couple moved to Rockland in 1964 where they raised their 5 children.

During the course of his life, Greg worked jobs in insurance and in the shipping department for several printing companies on the south shore. Greg was very involved in the community as a former CCD teacher for the Holy Family Parish in Rockland, and as a Rockland Youth baseball pinto league coach for the sons of Italy team. He was also a past president and member of the board of directors at BAARC, an organization that supported disabled children and their families, where he was able to help them pass public law 94-142 chapter 766 which guaranteed the right to education for developmentally delayed children.

In his free time, Gregory enjoyed spending time with his large and noisy family. He liked to play cribbage, and taught his children and grandchildren to play (and sometimes even beat him). Greg loved going on trips to Cape Cod, and spending time walking the beaches there. He liked to fish, and to spend time outdoors tending to his garden. Greg could also often be found painting and making different crafts to give out to his family or decorate his house.

Gregory is survived by his 5 children: Miriam Burgess and her husband Stephen Cutter, Kathleen Burgess and her partner Thomas Hurley, William Burgess and his wife Lori Burgess, Daniel Burgess and his partner Martine Taylor, and Gregory Burgess Jr., and also by his beloved grandchildren: Nicholas Burgess, Samantha Burgess, Matthew Cutter and his partner Kristen Nolan, Rachael Cutter, and Michael Burgess, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews, and friends.

Gregory’s family invites loved ones and friends to celebrate his life at Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St. Rockland MA 02370 on Monday 5/9/22 from 5-8 P.M. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday 5/10/22 at 9 A.M. at Holy Family Church in Rockland.

My thoughts and prayers to the Burgess family. Your father's brother Paul was married to my childhood friend, Rita. Having attended the wake for your father, I must commend the family for the magnificent tribute to a life well lived. The photos you put together certainly represents a loving family with the warmest of memories. You were your parent's greatest gift. This is not the end of their story, but the beginning of their legacy, as they live on in each of you. You made them proud and will continue to do so by the very example they set for you. There's no greater love than the bond of love in family. May you find peace in your heart from the memories, and strength from your faith to carry you through this difficult time. God bless you all. To the Burgess Family: I first met your father and mother in the early 60's and have very fond memories of that time. When I married I, my family spent many happy, great times with you and your parents. Your dad was always there if needed and was a great friend. You guys will miss him but as you say he has gone to with the love of his life next to you all. I am sure he is at peace and will always be looking over you. Love you all. Bern and Irene Fitzpatrick

To Greg's family. Some of my fondest memories are the sense of family whenever Greg and Helen welcomed me and my family during my summers at University in New England.. we always felt part of their family get togethers with the FitzGeralds and Carons. May he rest in peace. Andy Butt Newfoundland
