Obituary For George Scott Wheeler
George Scott Wheeler II., 56, of Rockland died December 29, 2007 after a prolonged illness. He was a well-known rock 'n roll musician and bandleader who pursued his 40 year career in New England and Britain, most notably in Liverpool, where, in 1996, he became the first American member of Merseycats, an organization of Beatles-era musicians. Among his colleagues were original Beatle Pete Best and Boston co-founder Brad Delp. He was the author of 2005's "Charlie Lennon: Uncle To A Beatle," based on his lively friendship with Liverpool's favorite pensioner. Mr. Wheeler was a former Enterprise copy editor and Rockland correspondent. He was a former president of the Rockland Sons of Union Veterans, and recently made an unsuccessful bid for a seat on the town planning board. He was born in Waltham, son of the late Burton Wheeler and Marilynn (Hunter) Wheeler, who died in May and June of 2007. He leaves his wife of 36 years Ramona L. Wheeler of Rockland and dear friend Martha Raber, also of Rockland. In lieu of flowers donations would be welcome to the Brockton MSPCA Shelter, 1300 W. Elm St Extension, Brockton, MA, 02301-2839. A reception will be held Sunday, January 13th from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Raddisson Hotel on Hingham St. in Rockland.

Mona I am saddened to hear of the loss of Scott. He was a special soul, with concern and love for the people in his life. With him go so many memories. I think he remembered more about my high school days than I do! I wish I could share my sympathy and reminiscences with you personally. Be strong. Roger

Scotty was my lifelong and trusted friend, since 1959. We shared so much over the years, rock and roll, music, history, all-things Nantucket, and great reunions there, the last being in November, 2006. An extrodinary man in many many ways. I'm still in disbelief that he is not ready to send me an e-mail about Nantucket happenings, or on the other end of the phone to talk music and life. To M&M goes my love and friendship, always. I won't be able to think about music or Nantucket without thinking a lot about Scotty. He had so many dreams and aspirations, looking for new endeavors for his artistic expressions, but with a foothold solidly in the past. His memory for trivia was just amazing. His love and affection for family and trusted friends was his great asset. I sincerely hope that he is having a ball now with great ancestorial reunions, and rocking out with all the musicians he always wanted to play with. Having a draft at the Brotherhood, and on stage at the Muse. With love and affection, Kenn (Mon Capitan)

Ramona, I'm sorry to say that we have not met. The loss of Scotty, so soon after his parents, must be overwhelming. Scotty was a gifted musician with an encyclopedic memory for old songs. His temperment could be consoling, conspiring, inspirational, and on a rare occasion explosive, but his love for music was above the fray. While it's been a couple of years since my last open mic at Berts, I've often thought of what I called my "extended dysfunctional family" with the many personalities and talent and how Scott touched all in his own way. By Best Wishes and Prayers to you and your family Sincerely, Mike Landers

Dear Ramona and Family, I'm sorry to hear that Scott died. I didn't know him well but remember him at various open mics, especially at Bert's and once gracing the SSFMC (Beal House) stage. He did love playing 60s music! Scott also once gave me good advice about the music industry. May you find peace overtime. My condolences again to you and your family. Karen

I still have a herd time accepting that this happened. Scott was here at the house less than a month before his passing, and I'm sorry that we didn't have longer to yak. As well as being a world class expert on all things "Beatles", Scott was also a great fan of early Blues. In that context, we played many gigs together over the course of several years all around the Cape, and SE Mass. area. With his left-handed, flat pick style, he was the best bass player that I ever had the pleasure to work with. We had many interesting conversations on a vast variety of topics, and I will miss that also. You may be high, you may be low You may be rich now, or you may be poor But when the Lord gets ready-you got to move.

Though I didn't know Scotty very long, I had met him at an open mic in Dover, NH last summer/fall and found him to be very talented, quite the gentleman, and a real pleasure to know. He will be sorely missed by all of us up here! Barb
