Obituary For Frederick H. Corey

Frederick H. Corey, age 95 passed away peacefully on December 30th after a long and wonderful life. Mr. Corey was a lifelong resident of Rockland, MA and was the son of Dr. Frederick and Mabelle Corey. After graduating from Rockland High School he went on to graduate from Green Mountain College in Vermont. Just prior to his entering the service he married Bertha Ashworth and they spent 60 loving years together until she passed away in 2004.

Mr. Corey joined the army and was there for D-Day, as well as campaigns in northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, nicknamed the Ivy Division. The role of the infantry was to take ground and hold, and were often on the front lines of battle. On D-Day Mr. Corey’s division was to land on Utah Beach under the command of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. They were all quite surprised when they landed on the beach in a quiet area having missed their landing area farther down the beach, It is there that a the famous statement by Roosevelt “so we’re going to start the war from here became their battle cry. Shortly after landing on Utah beach the division made its way through France and Germany. The division faced its most difficult task in the Hurtgen Forest, part of the Siegfried Line Campaign. Then with almost no rest, the division was then involved in the Battle of the Bulge. It was not until November of 1945, when Mr. Corey was able to get back to Rockland and his wife Bertha.

Over the many years Mr. Corey was very active with the 4th division helping organize and run many of their yearly events all over the country reuniting many members of “America’s Greatest Generation. On Memorial Day in 2006 Mr. Corey was honored to be the Grand Marshall for Rockland’s annual Parade. He and Bertha took part in both the 25th and 50th anniversary ceremonies of D-Day in France.

Upon returning home Mr. Corey worked in The Webbing Company, and then spent the years prior to his retirement as the manager of Whitman Malt Liquor. During his retirement years he managed the operation of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Rockland.

Mr. Corey leaves behind daughter Linda Gibson and her husband Arthur of West Hills CA, daughter Judith Kupferberg and her husband Randy of Plymouth, and a son John and his wife Dorothy of Rockland. Also, 6 granddaughters, Heather Fogel, Erin Hitchcock, Melissa Caisse, Laura Kupferberg, and Jennifer and Sarah Corey. He also leaves two great grandchildren Devin Fogel and Sonya Hitchcock.

There will be visiting with the family at 10:00 am on Wednesday January 5th followed by a Service of Remembrance at 11:00 am in the Magoun- Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union Street, Rockland, MA.

Mr. Corey was a lifelong member of the Channing Unitarian Church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made in his memory to the Church at 45 Webster Street, Rockland MA 02370.

Dear Judy, Linda and John My condolences on the loss of your Dad. What a full and amazing life he led. He is the epitome of that "greatest generation". He served his country with honor, during moments of history that we only read about. Then, he came home, and worked hard and took care of his family. And, he never forgot those he had served with. What an honorable man. Sincerely, Terri Wax
