Obituary For Edith M. Bates

Edith M. Bates, 93 of Hanover died on December 18, 2008 after a period of failing health. She was born in Quincy daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Small) Fosdick and was raised and educated in the Hough's Neck section of the city. Mrs. Bates has made her home in Hanover for more than 70 years. She held a variety of positions over the years including serving as an inspector at National Fireworks Co., a waitress at the former Dreamwold Restaurant in Scituate, a Hanover school bus driver and an aide at the Center Elementary School in Hanover.

Edie volunteered her time and talents to several organizations as well including the Hanover Garden Club, South Shore Hospital and the Hanover Visiting Nurse Association where she served on the Board of Directors.

Her late husband, T. Drew Bates was Fire Chief and a Police Officer in the Town of Hanover as well as Supervisor of Maintenance for the Hanover Public Schools.

She is survived by her son, Peter E. Bates and his wife Janet of Needham and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Thomas D. Bates and sister of the late Olive Iris, Irene Lincoln, Gladys Morse, Mabel DellaBarba, Fred Fosdick, Chick Fosdick and Fred Pudsey

A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 10:00 AM in the First Congregational Church of Hanover, Rev. Donald Remick will officiate. Burial followed in Hanover Center Cemetery. Calling hours in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. ROCKLAND were on Monday December 22, 2008 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Donations may be made to the Hanover Visiting Nurse Assoc. 550 Hanover St. Hanover, MA 02339.

    When I was a little boy I lived on cross st. I would visit her and Drew. They took me to the movies to see Taps and took me to Mcdonalds. She and her husband were very nice to me. She is missed.
