Obituary For Dorothy E. Folsom

Dorothy E. (McCallum) Folsom, age 93 of Rockland, MA and Alton Bay, NH passed away peacefully on February 12, 2016.

Dot was born September 29, 1922 in Rockland, MA. After graduating from Rockland High School in 1940, and the Kathleen Dell School in Boston she worked as a legal secretary prior to marrying Bruce B. Folsom in 1944. Bruce and Dot were married for 49 years, made their home in Rockland for 28 years. She then moved to Marshfield for 15 years, before retiring to Alton Bay, NH in 1987. Dot worked for Rockland Public Schools for 25 years.

Dot is survived by her four children John B. Folsom and his wife Maureen (Ryan) of Milton, Nancy (Folsom) Thibeault of Enon, OH, Richard B. Folsom and wife Kathryn (Lambe) of Weymouth, and Kenneth B. Folsom and wife Brenda (Marshall) of Rockland. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, parents Ethel E. (Lewis) and J. Stuart McCallum, her two siblings Barbara M. McCallum and James S. McCallum, and her son-in-law Rodney S. Jones.

Dot was a phenomenal lady who will be remembered as kind, pleasant, adventurous, forward thinking, active, strong, stubborn and independent. She served as a Civil Defense Air Raid Warden during World War II, played the piano and organ, sang in the church choir, led several scout troops, grew flowers and vegetables, picked fruit, canned the fruit and vegetables, cooked from "scratch", and raised four children. She camped, climbed mountains, and helped build a three story house on Lake Winnipesaukee. She was an avid reader and knitter, a valued volunteer at the Alton Library and a member of the Alton Historical Society and Garden Club. She travelled the world, was there for her family and filled her time with activities that made her happy. She conquered all that life put in her path.

Grandma Dot, as she was known to her grandchildren always made time to listen and bake gingerbread houses with her grandchildren. Her positive, independent and strong spirit lives on in all of their hearts. She was also fortunate to be involved in her great grandchildren's' lives and formed strong bonds with them. Her eyes always lit up when the kids were around. She was a wonderful role model to all. Her family was fortunate to have her in their lives for so many years. She will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

The family welcomes friends and relatives to celebrated her life on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 from 5:00-8:00 PM in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. Rockland. A Funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday February 18, 2016 in the funeral home. Donations in her memory may be made to the Rockland Memorial Library, 20 Belmont St., Rockland, MA 02370.

Gramma Dot will be well missed. We always enjoyed visiting her with her positive attitude and wit. She was extremely humble and generous to all that met her. My kids were fortunate to have her in their lives as a Grandmother figure. They loved visiting her with Uncle Dick at her home in Alton. They enjoyed hearing all the stories about building the house and being the fastest typist ever! Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the family and friends. Sara Lambe Barnum

Dot was a special lady. I had opportunity several times to sit and chat with her while she was on Marco Island. She was always interested in so many things, but her family was always #1. She was a real role model for her children and grandchildren, and she will truly be missed. She's in her happy place now and will be able to watch over all members of her family in a different way. She was a renowned traveler, went on many trips, and her new journey has just begun. Rest in peace, Dot. And journey forward....
