Obituary For Doric Scarpelli
Doric Scarpelli, 62 of Kingston died suddenly on April 26, 2014 while vacationing in Venice, Italy. His beloved wife Judi was by his side.
Doric was a gentle and devoted husband, father and educator, working for 28 years in the Rockland Public Schools. He served as an adjustment and guidance counselor at Rockland Middle School and guidance counselor and director of guidance at Rockland High School, before serving as Assistant Superintendent of the Rockland Public School District. Prior to his time in Rockland, Doric taught for several years in Weymouth. He retired in June 2013.
Doric was kind, loving, and faithful. He cherished his family and enjoyed taking long walks and hikes, romantic dinners with his wife, supporting his children as they grew to have families of their own and reading books with his grandchildren on his lap. He was never happier than when he was on Swan's Island, Maine each summer with his family. He and Judi loved to travel and were frequently planning their next trip abroad or to see children and grandchildren in New Jersey and California.
Doric assisted thousands of Rockland children as a school guidance counselor and was known for his fairness and compassion. As Assistant Superintendent he oversaw the building and development of the new middle school and renovated high school. He was the longtime director of the Rockland Regional Adult Learning Center, and is recognized as a leader in the Massachusetts adult education field, serving on the Workforce Investment Board for Southeastern Massachusetts. Additionally, Doric served on the boards of the Rockland Community Coordinating Council, the Business Managers Lighthouse Group, the Massachusetts Association of Schools Business Office, and most recently the South Shore Community Action Council. He is remembered for being kind, wise and generous in his mentorship and guidance of other education professionals throughout the state.
Doric and Judi have led lives of deep faith and were active in their church communities. They served together in several ministries at Holy Family Church in Rockland for more than 30 years. Since moving to Kingston, Doric became a lector at St Mary's Church in Plymouth and volunteered with his wife Judi at St. Matthew's Kitchen.
Doric is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Judi (Thompson) Scarpelli and their 7 children: Michael and his partner Aimee Solomon; Dorick and his wife Lauren Dietz; Daniel and his wife Nora Auston; Paul and his wife Jennifer; Joseph; Kathryn Stylien and her husband Alex; and Ann of Kingston. He is the son of the late William Scarpelli and is survived by his mother, Jean (Murphy) Scarpelli of North Weymouth; and his siblings, Robert; Susan Byron; John; Judy Barsamian; and William. Also surviving are eight grandchildren (Mia, Caitlin, Dylan, Lucia, Frank, Olivia, Arlo, and Cora) and many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate his life on Friday, May 2 from 3-8 PM at Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St. Rockland. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM on Saturday May 3 at St. Mary's Parish, 313 Court Street in Plymouth. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to St. Mary's Parish or WUMB (www.wumb.org).

Mr. Scarpelli has always been so great with me. Especially with helping out with looking for colleges. When I talked to other guidance counselor a at the school, they would always have me settle. Mr.Scarpelli wasn't like that at all. He inspired me to strive for the best and to not settle for anything less than great. Thank you Mr. Scarpelli for that. Truly an inspiration.

Mr. Scarpelli was one of the only people who gave me direct, good, sound advice as a teenager. as a raging youth, he would sit me down and tell me how it is, and what he thought i should do. many times i listened, many times i didn't. when faced with the wrath of my horrible decisions, he would dusk me off help me through consequences and help me make the right choice the next time. he taught me one of the most valued lessons in life, how to learn from my own mistakes. prayers go out to his family from my family for i would surely not be the man i am today without him. Rest in Power Mr Scarpelli.

It was my great pleasure to volunteer and work alongside Doric for 9+ years. I so admired him. Doric was one of the most kindhearted and humble people I knew. He relished in others successes while keeping his private. He loved showing off all of your photos in his office and sharing stories of your latest accomplishments. He was one proud Dad! I'm sure his kind traits are a part of each of you. A gift from him to all. He will be missed by many.

To Judi and all family members. Our prayers are said and will continue for all of the family. We trust Doric is now at complete peace and comfort. Knowing Doric he has a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes appreciating the beauty of his entire family. Not much time goes by without remembering the love of twenty+ people at your home raising walls as we built an addition on your home. This was an example of the magnetism of Doric and Judi. So much love, caring and joy. Others wanted to be around you both. May the Lord's peace and joy be present in your heart as time goes on. We trust Doric is truly filled with this same peace now. Best Regards, Jim and Fran Matthews

Mrs. Scarpelli and family, My prayers and thoughts are with you at this most difficult time with the loss of a great, kind, and gentleman. I met Doric many years ago through our work in the adult education field. All the years I've known Doric as the Department of Elementary and Education/ACLS Liaison for Rockland PS. He has been a highly dedicated and respectful man, always responding to the needs of his students, and to our demands in the most timely manner - even when on vacation anywhere, the last one being in Italy last Friday, he responded to my email request for information. He will be missed, may he be resting in peace and that the Lord give you strength and comfort throughout this difficult time. Marie Narvaez, DESE/ACLS Marie Narvaez, Canton

Doric was my friend. He listened when I was outraged and calmed me when I was pained. He taught me patience and how to think deliberately and righteously in stressful times. He modeled so many traits for which I will always be thankful, but the best that Doric did for Jim and I was watching him as a husband, father, and grandfather, and learning how to do it right. I will miss you, dear friend, but your grace, style and love will live on forever in all those who were touched by you in so many ways.

Today as I made the sign of the cross on my son's forehead - I reflected on the man that showed me this simple, but powerful act twenty years ago. He and his lovely wife Judi were our Baptism leaders. Our sons are now young men, and we have followed their footsteps as Baptism team members. Doric was a role model, a compassionate and faith filled man. May you take comfort in knowing how many lives he touched and that his words, of wisdom and acts of kindness will live on. Peace

I became Superintendent of Schools in 2007 three months after Doric became Assistant Superintendent. For six years we worked side by side. We had coffee together in the morning and we waited for each other in order to have lunch together. We talked work and sports and family. These times were often the best parts of my day. I frankly haven't got my head around the fact that he has gone. He was a gentle man, an interesting man and above all a family man. My heart goes out to Judy and his children and grandchildren.

I remembered when my class was making the transition to junior high from Memorial Park and he was visiting the classrooms. He was very calm and reassuring to the students, understanding and trying to pacify any anxieties we'd have about going to the new school. He was extremely sympathetic and helpful to the students. I was lucky enough to have him as my guidance counselor in 8th grade. His insight into navigating the school system was very clear cut, and he knew what course of action would benefit the students while still getting a quality education. Not to mention, he was a really nice guy who had this Zen-like personality that could put anyone at ease. My mother, a product of the school system herself, knew many of the school officials herself, hadn't met Mr. S. Upon meeting him as my GC, she couldn't stop raving about how much she liked him, knowing that she could trust him as my GC. I can only echo the statements I've seen about his work from other former students, with many remarking about the care and dedication he had to all of them, no matter where their social standing was in their class. Judgment-free and always sympathetic, he was always there to lend an ear and gave them advice on not only being a good student, but being a good human being. There are a lot of moments I'll remember about Mr. S: his office with a lot of files and books, the short sleeve dress shirt with a tie, his laughter and his easygoing personality. Rest in peace, Mr. S.
