Obituary For Donald M. Mayer
Donald Mattern Mayer
August 27, 1934 to November 21, 2024. As a young boy Donald lived in Whitman on Harvard Street with his parents and grandparents. Then Donald and his brother Russell and his parents moved to a house on West Washington Street in Hanson. Out in the woods way in the back of their house lived a man in a dirt covered cave and then a small shack Donald called “The Hermit”. He liked the old man and felt sorry for him because boys from the town would come and cause trouble for him. So, Donald told him when he had to go to town to get groceries and supplies, Donald would watch his place for him.
Another memory he shared with me as a young boy was the boys in his class would love to sing “The Grandfather Clock. But when the song came to the word ”clock" the boys changed it to something else and then roared with laughter.
He joined the Army in August of 1953 and was discharged in August of 1956.
He married Etta (Dolly)' Cater in 1958 and then years later married Judith, his present wife in 1973. He is survived by three children, Robert from Middleboro, Donald Scott from Wisconsin and Tanya Kim from Halifax and born in Korea. Robert has three children, Bethany, Matthew and Katie and a granddaughter Rowen. Donald Scott is married to Tatiana and has a son Nikita. Donald was a loving father and devoted husband.
Donald was an excellent math teacher to those students who wanted to learn. To those students that didn't want to learn he did his best. Years later, many students wrote to him from college, praising him on his ability to teach math well, as it helped them considerably with their more advanced classes. He taught in Plymouth and Abington Schools. He also learned to fix up Volkswagens to drive and Judith would often hold the flashlight for him while he tinkered.
Donald and Judith traveled to many places including Austria, Prince Edward Island, Florida Keys, California, The Blue Ridge Mountains and several islands. They were also avid dancers.
The Meyer family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate his life in the First Congregational Church in Halifax on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 11:00 AM.
