Obituary For Clare Crowell
Clare Crowell of Marshfield and Norwell passed away on November 14, 2024
Born to Gus and Norma Scherer in Mount Vernon, New York in 1945, she grew up in New York, and Missouri before the family settled in Greenwich, CT where she graduated high school. Clare moved to Beacon Hill in Boston where she met Peter Crowell when they both worked at Harold Cabot. Theymarried in August of 1967 and ultimately purchased land Norwell, MA where they built a house and raised their three children, Michael, Anne and David. She taught most of the kids in town how to swim at McMullen’s pool and later was a teacher at the New Nursery school in Norwell. This inspired Clare to finish her degree and she returned to school to pursue her bachelor’s which she received from UMASS Boston in 1994.
Summers were always spent on the water. “Rebecca,” a 33-foot wooden cabin cruiser became the home away from home until the family outgrew it. “Gulliver,” a 42-foot trawler became the new summer home, moored in Waquoit Bay down the Cape. While most summer cruises were limited to Cape Cod and the Islands, the family went as far north as Bar Harbor, Maine and as far south as Greenwich, CT.
Clare treasured her friends; the annual “Mom’s Weekend” with her Norwell crew on the Vineyard was a tradition that has continued for over 40 years.
When Peter died in 2000, Clare’s focus turned to travel on land. She became an avid motorcycle rider and has traveled much of the country on two wheels. She was proud that she traveled to each of the fifty states on her cross-country trips, but she did not limit herself to domestic travel. International trips included Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Clare often declared “I should stay home more,” but she was a globe trotter at heart.
After Clare’s Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis, she became a dedicated part of the 110 Fitness community in Rockland, ultimately being named “Boxer of the Year” in 2024.
Clare leaves her daughter, Anne and her husband Greg; her sons, Michael and David; grandchildren, Colin, Alison, Lucy, Lizzy and Grace; as well as her brother, Joe and sister Liddy.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 21from 4 to 7 pm at Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home in Rockland, followed by a gathering at Players Sports Bar and Grille in Rockland. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that a donation be made in Clare’s memory to Dana Farber or the Katie Crowell Foundation.
