Obituary For Charles McManus

Charles A. McManus, 86 of Venice Florida formerly of Randolph and Abington, died on September 24, 2012 at the Venice Regional Medical Center. He was born in Boston, son of the late Charles and Florence (Dede) McManus and was raised and educated in the city. He was a graduate of Boston Technical High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He saw action in both the European and Pacific Theatres in World War II and was later recalled for two years of active duty during the Korean War.

Charlie joined the Boston Police Department in 1952 and was assigned patrol duty at District Nine in Roxbury. He entered the plain clothes force in 1957 and in 1961 he received the second highest award for a Boston Police Officer. The Thomas F. Sullivan award was received for capturing a violent armed robber. He was promoted to detective in 1962 in the same district to investigate felonies.

In 1974 he was transferred to the Vice-Intelligence Division at Police Headquarters and began to cover the entire city. Working closely with the FBI, he was instrumental in prosecuting dozens of cases in the Adult Entertainment District of the city.

In 1979, at his request, he transferred to the Homicide Division where he served until his retirement in 1990. He attended specialized training from the F.B.I. and the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council. In addition, he was highly trained in forensic methods, preservation of evidence and medical legal investigation. Charlie received numerous awards in the course of his career from several police commissioners including the Boston Police Officers Distinguished Service Award

Mr. McManaus was a past 5 time Commodore of the South Boston Yacht Club and had served as Commodore of the Massachusetts Boating and Yacht Clubs Association. He was an avid golfer and played regularly at the Venice Country Club in Florida.

Husband of the late Ann (Mestko) McManus, he is survived by his daughter, Donna E. Leverone of Abington, 3 grandchildren Cheryl Morley and Anthony Leverone of Abington and Linda Begley of Norwell, 3 great grandchildren, Emily, David and Ashley Begley and his siblings, Marie McGuirk of Michigan, John McManus of Arkansas and Joan Roach of NY.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 22, 2012 at St. Bridget's Church, 455 Plymouth St. in Abington at 9:00 AM. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Rockland.

The Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. in Rockland is honored to be assisting the family.
