Obituary For Charles E. Leverone

Charles Leverone nearly became a farmer.

Luckily for the many lives he touched in his education and coaching career, he changed his path midway through college.

Charlie's teaching and coaching career began in 1961. He was a distinguished teacher of Anatomy, Physiology, Biology, and Physical Education at Rockland High School which lasted 30 years until his retirement at 1991. He coached Cross-Country and Track & Field on the high school and college levels for 53 years.

Charlie coached Track and Field at Rockland, Scituate, Sacred Heart and Norwell High Schools and at Boston University. To his credit he has coached a number of Massachusetts State Champions in several running events and in every field event including the high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin and pole vault as well as several New England Champions. In addition, two of Charlie's throwers from Boston University competed in the Olympic Games. He has been named Massachusetts State Coach of the Year several times and is also a member of Massachusetts Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Rockland High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

From 1992 to 2002, Charlie was the Outdoor Girls Field Event Coach at Scituate High School. During those years, Scituate dual meet record was almost perfect 74-3-1 and he is considered by many to be a technical expert in coaching Cross-Country and Track and Field.

In 1995, in an unprecedented selection, Charlie's contributions to Track and Field were noted by the Boston Globe when he became the only assistant coach in history to be honored as the Globe Spring Track Coach of the Year.

Charlie was a competitor himself and competed at Arlington High School, Huntington Prep, and at UMASS Amherst. While at UMASS he earned a total of 14 letters, 5 varsity, for which he was later inducted into the UMASS Athletic Hall of Fame, a record which has stood for 55 years and still stands today. He also captured the NEAAU Trampoline Championship in gymnastics and won the Lojko Award his senior year in 1960 for being the best three-sport athlete at UMASS.

Charlie's college sports achievements were interrupted when he was drafted into the military and served honorably in the United States Army Medical Corps during the Korean War in the mid 1950's.

In 1989, Charlie earned All American Honors in the high jump of the Masters Division. He was third in the high jump in the Masters States Championships held in Orlando, and finished second in the high jump in the United States-Canadian Masters Championships held in Toronto.

Charles E. Leverone died Tuesday, February 3rd at his home after a brief battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Louis Henry and Hazel Wood Leverone, born on December 31, 1932 in his native town of Arlington, MA. Charlie resided in Hanson for the past 45 years and passed away at age 82 surrounded by his family for the last few days of his life. His wife, Antonia, 52 years of marriage, was by his side at his passing. He is also survived by their three children Crispin, Jeffrey (Nina Belle Leverone) and Diana. He was the loving grandfather to six grandchildren; Cameron, Hailey, Dylan, Marsela, Griffin and Maxwell. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Barnes.

Sir Charles "The Great" was a man of wisdom and always said "You've got to keep moving, it's better to wear out than rust out" and "Have Fun".

We are proud Charlie's accomplishments and his contributions to the generations of young people he coached. He will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him well.

The family welcomes friends and family to celebrate his life on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union Street Rockland, from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM. Following visitation, the Leverone Family invites friends and loved ones to join them at The Rockland Golf Course for a memorial gathering. Funeral Services will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to the Rockland Athletic Boosters, 52 MacKinley Way, Rockland, MA 02370.

Coach Leverone was my X-Country coach while I ran at Rockland High School from 1983-1986. He was a great coach and he was very kind to us all. He taught us how to be competitors and I was in the best shape of my life under his guidance and direction. I'll never forget the van rides to Franklin Park X-Country meets. I was lucky to have had the opportunity to meet and be coached by such a great person. He will be missed, God Bless

  • 05/25/2021

I wish I had one last visit with Charlie. We were neighbors over fifty years ago and have kept in touch all these years. I always enjoyed his sense of humor and his knowledge of all things antique. He will be missed by all who knew him..

  • 05/25/2021

I did not have Coach Leverone as my coach, but he was my brothers's for all 4yrs at Rockland High. He looked up to and respected him. I was just a little kid then, but seeing how much he meant to the team made me look forward to getting to really know him. I was on the girls track and x country teams so he wasn't my coach, but I still got to see him coach and nurture the boys. Every now and then the boys and girls traveled together so I did get to enjoy some of his wisdom also. Thank you, Coach Leverone and his family for giving us the time to spend with him.

  • 05/25/2021

Sadden to hear of Mr. Leveron's passing. I had him for PE, back in the late 70's to 82.He was a sweet man. Thanks for really caring about us kids, prayers & thoughts are with his family.

  • 05/25/2021

The highlight of our trips to PEI was seeing "cousin Charlie" at the Darby cottage at Wheatley River and listening as he enthusiastically described in great detail the treasures that he had acquired on his travels that day. Last year was an extra bonus since we were roommates for several days at the Darby abode on Maple Ave. He will be well remembered and sadly missed by all.

  • 05/25/2021

Charlie Leverone was my Gym Teacher for 2 of my 4 years at RHS (1971-75). He was no nonsense, but he was also a real and fair minded person. My brother in law, and two of his children also were coached by Charlie in the 60's, 80's, and 90's. Rest in Peace, Charlie. You really were one of the Good Guys.

A magnificent man indeed. Lev, your dedication, enthusiasm and love for the sport was contagious. Your coaching went far beyond the cross country course and it was an honor to share time with you. Your family ought to be extremely proud with the impact you've had on the entire running community and with the legacy you have left behind. You're certainly one of a kind and you will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to your family. Rest in peace Coach.

My friend, my teammate in Track and Swimming, and an inspiration to any that knew him, has passed and we are all the worse for it. He got me to try out for soccer but after we practiced "headers" I opted for the track and the pool. Always friendly and jocular, he was fun to be with, an encouragement machine, helping teammates with his special brand of helpfulness. I marveled at his ability on the trampoline and diving board in spite of a physical impairment that made balance a challenge. I confess that I was kind of jealous of his enormous talent, Being several years older than the rest of us ,he was uniquely positioned to bring his wisdom and experience and impart it to us. We met at a reunion a few years ago and it was a wonderful occasion. We had lived close together while growing up; I'm from Somerville, but soon after graduation I went on the road as an actor , then in the Army, off to Broadway and finally to Hollywood so we hardly saw each other over the many years that passed and I confess again, I'm still jealous. What a man, what a life, what an inspiration. God has a coaching job ready for the Spring Track season. He'll be assisting our old UMASS coach with the hurdlers .Love to his wife and family. Jack Knight UM "60

  • 05/25/2021

My thoughts are with The Leverone Family. I had Mr.Leverone periodically throughout my years at RHS and he was always the NICEST man and such a pleasure to be around. May he have a peaceful rest.

  • 05/25/2021

I had Mr. Leverone for gym class and I always saw him around the school and town, he ALWAYS had a smile and a hello.. Just a really nice man.. my Dad had him for track I think and he broke a high jump record under Mr. Leverone's coaching... and my Aunt had him for a teacher too and she actually got us our family's first puppy from Mr. Leverone..his name was Jasper and he was half husky and half german shepherd... he lived to be 13 years old ..I think Mr. Leverone said the neighbors german shepherd jumped a fence to get into his yard where his husky was.. the result was Jasper and all the other cute pups.. So I just wanted to say he will be missed because there are not too many people like him.. God bless him and his family.. he was one of the good guys for sure!

  • 05/25/2021

I knew Mr. Leverone when I was a student at RHS back in the late 70's. He was a great guy and always had a smile on his face. He obviously cared very much about the students. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time.

"Mr. Leverone" was my biology teacher at RHS. He was an amazing teacher that I remember with gratitude - for nearly 50 years now. Most recently we reconnected at a Rockland Library lecture, where we shared some 1960's magazines and archives from my collection. I send my sincere sympathies to Mrs. Leverone and all the family: Charles will be missed and fondly remembered for his many contributions to the lives of his students.

  • 05/25/2021

In 30 years of coaching the field events myself, Charlie was one of a handful of people whose opinions I respected enough to ask for advice. He had a deep understanding of these events that comes from doing them not just reading about them. Simply a class guy.

  • 05/25/2021

My condolences to the Leverone Family. Charlie was a good man! So many great memories of him from my high school years and beyond.

You have my condolences on the loss of your husband and father. I have many fond memories of his A&P class at Rockland High and of his presence at so many sporting events over the years. He never seemed to age and always had a quick smile and a kind word. What a wonderful legacy.

  • 05/25/2021

Always cheerful and smiling, a great teacher and a wonderful man.

  • 05/25/2021

Lev, was my high school x-country and track coach from 1988-1991. He was a great man. He nicknamed me Spider because of my long, flailing legs when I ran. He pushed me and my fellow teammates above and beyond what we thought possible. He was so much more than just a coach, he was a mentor in all sorts of things. I can see him standing along the track or XC course pushing us to always run through the finish line. I see him driving along beside us as we struggled back from wherever he had dropped us off in his van to run home. There was always time for a yard sale. He influenced my life for the better and I will always be grateful to him. I hope his family can find solace in the fact that he was loved and respected by so many. I guess it was just time for a new coach in heaven. If they were not running up there before then they sure are now. Rest in Peace, Lev.

  • 05/25/2021

Mr. Leverone was my track coach for the 880 yards in the 1980s at Rockland High School. I remember him even "recruiting" us in the junior high. He was a great encourager and coach. I would vomit after my races and he'd still say, "I think you had more." Of course he and my grandfather teamed up on me. Anyway, these things stay with you a life time and create character and resolve. Good, good man.

  • 05/25/2021

A fine athlete and coach with a great sense of humor. Someone we'll always remember...

  • 05/25/2021

  • 05/25/2021

My condolences to the Leverone family. "Mr. Leverone" was a wonderful man as well as teacher and coach. I was his track statistician in the 60's and enjoyed many hours with him. I saw him often over these many years and I will remember him always as a man who loved life and lived it well.

  • 05/25/2021

Your spirit, passion, and uniqueness always kept a smile on my face. It has been my pleasure and honor to know you as I have! Simply put, there was no one better at what you did. It was always a great day to be a Dog when you were near. CEL - One of a kind.

  • 05/25/2021

Mr. Leverone was not only a nice teacher, but a kind hearted person. I haven't seen him in years, but one memory I do have is on a beautiful summer day years ago he surprised us with a visit when he was on Prince Edward Island. It was a nice visit with lots of laughs. My condolences to The Leverone Family.

  • 05/25/2021

My sincere condolences to the Leverone family. I enjoyed Charlie, he was such a character...always enjoyed his stories.

  • 05/25/2021

My condolences to the Leverone family. Charlie was not only a great teacher, coach, and friend, but he was also a mentor to less experienced coaches like myself, and an inspiration to those fortunate enough to have been coached by him. I take solitude in the many wonderful memories we shared.

  • 05/25/2021

I only met Charlie a few times, but he instantly showed me a zeal for life that I hope to have at that age! He is someone we are certainly proud to call a 'fellow UMass track alumnus'- a wonderful man and a wonderful life... Jon Korhonen, UMass '06

I was friends with Diana at Maquan Elementary School back in 1973? I had been thinking of her yesterday wondering whatever happened to her after all these years. I don't remember much of her dad but am thinking that my memories came to me due to his passing. Prayers to all and Diana, contact me p lease. I'm on facebook under sandy Goddard (marsden) from 515 Indian Head St. Hanson MA 1972-1975. I remember your dad taking us to a Bruins game to see Bobby Orr!

  • 05/25/2021

I met Charlie for the first time in the fall of 1952 while on the Stockbridge School of Agriculture football team; a two year school at the University of Massachusetts. He, Paul Leonard and I became friends at this time and remained so for over 62 years. I saw him jump on the trampoline in the U of M cage and go through some of his routines and he was flawless. He was a magnificent athlete. I can see why he is in the Un. of Mass. Athletic Hall of Fame as a record holder. I never heard him complain about his disability and that makes his accomplishments even more impressive. As a teacher and coach he was what God put him on earth to do as described by his students and athletes in this "Guestbook".

  • 05/25/2021

my sympathy and condolences to the leverone family.charlie was an unique guy. i remembered the time he showed me his massive tool collection that he acquired from yard sales.he use to bring them into school to see if his students could identify them.one was an unusually small tool called a cherry picker.it was quite in teresting. charlie leaves an envious legacy and a world much better off because of his contributions. rest in peace friend and fellow coach

Dear friend Cris Leverone and family I am so sorry for your loss, when someone that you love dies you never quite get over it, you just slowly learn how to go on without them but always keeping them safe in your heart. May precious memories fill your heart and ease your pain.

  • 05/25/2021

To the Leverone Family, I send my honest condolences. Charlie was one special man. He invested himself in his students, and athletes. Coach to me , was a man who made a huge impact in my life. I was troubled youth, I was having great difficulty in the years I was in Rockland between 1960-1965. I was not doing well with the academics and was troubled with life in general. Coach picked up on the fact I was in trouble. He inserted himself skillfully into my life. He was always demonstrating that he cared, that he was aware and that he was there for youth like myself. I was no athlete but he encouraged me to run and he worked on me to join cross country. Through running he helped me to concentrate on things other than the problems that were threatening my life. In class and in sports coach found time daily to impact my life for good. I know that other teachers did this as well. Coach however was the man God used in my life to pull me out of a potential death spin. He taught me discipline to study, to prepare and to work for positives in life. With out a real fatherly guidance in my life he filled that in any way he could. I say all this in retrospect, it was years later during a twenty year career in the US Navy that I became aware of how thankful I should be for coach Leverone and numerous others who impacted a troubled Kids life. Of The many , Coach was one of the exceptional menu that impacted my life. I hope to see him in Glory one day and tell him so! Michael T. Hutson Sr. Thankful for such a kind man, Blackwood, NJ Feb 07, 2015

He always knew I would have a treasure for him if it was something that he couldn't carry on his own my husband and I would dealer it put it to where ever he needed it to go. Charlie and I began our journey at Rockland High School at the same time and shared many good times and got through the tough times together. To say Charlie was unique is an understatement. His love for teaching and coaching created a special bond with his student/athletes. He was very proud of his accomplishments at his alma mater, the University of Massachusetts. He leaves an indelible legacy of caring, hard work and love that will rememberd by those of us who had the privilege of knowing him. My deepest sympathy to Toni and family.

Imagine living 82 years and everyone you've taught, everyone you've coached smiles and remembers the encouragement you gave them. For some, it was only a decade ago; for some others, it was five decades ago. You improved many lives and you'll live forever. This Guest Book is proof...

I am so sorry for the loss of Coach Leverone . Charlie was a long time friend, we got to know each other at RHS. in 1961,I being a tall skinny kid who just happened to like to run.Coach took me under his wing and we spent many an afternoon running talking, He talked I listened. That man could tell stories. No one my age at the time knew about Coach and his passion , Kids he could teach and talk to us not as teacher and student as a guide to life as well .He always seemed to have a plan in his heart and mind fro his Teams.I was a sprinter ran the 100 and 220 and the relay.Coach came to me during a track meet against Abington he says muscie your gonna run a 440 in this meet,I looked at Him and said Coach your kidding me right. He said nope I don't care if you finish last just run your best 220 ever well I finished 3rd Jay Condon won the race and the Abington runner finished 2nd.We, Rockland won the meet by a point because Coach knew that Abingtons runner would try to beat me Jay passed him about 20 feet from the finish line.Just the way Coach planned it. We have all lost a really GOOD Guy, a Great Teacher, Friend.Thoughts and prayers to the Leverone Family Joe Muscato class of 1962 RHS

We, in the class of 1964 knew Mr. Leverone as a quiet and unassuming person. He was a fine teacher and role model for many of us. I never knew of his accomplishments in his college days - he never made a big deal of it. The students and their well being were always his focus. It was wonderful to see him at our reunion this past September. He may have been sick even then, never let on, but hopefully enjoyed being with us all, again. Rest in Peace, Mr. Leverone. You will not be soon forgotten.

  • 05/25/2021

He was my friend, colleague and fellow track official and I will miss him. RIP my good friend! Dave Post

He never bragged but I certainly noted his remarkable personal athletic accomplishments at our Alma Mater, UMass-Amherst. He truly filled "the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth of distance run." Well done, Charlie.

He lived life to the fullest. His example is what we all should live by. We will never again see an old tool, a glass Pyrex coffee pot or paint by number painting, without thinking of him. He was the best!

I first met Charlie at a Track & Field camp at Brandeis in the summer of 1977 and later, Charlie coached me for one year at BU during the 79-80 season...I will always remember Charlie as a fun-loving, upbeat gentleman who offered a wealth of knowledge and experience to the athletes he coached...I will also never forget some of the witty, sage advice he used to offer us which always got a laugh such as: "Throw far, you'll do better...!" After I moved to NH in the mid-80's and stopped actively competing I had not seen Charlie for many years, only to run into him again few years ago at the Umass Invitational outdoor meet when my daughter was throwing for BC...he still had that same smile and great attitude that I remembered from many years ago. He touched the lives of so many and I am sure he will be greatly missed. My sincerest condolences to Charlie's, wife, family and friends. Chip Huckins

I remember once, at a yard sale, Charlie bought an owl. When I asked what he was gonna do with it, he said, "Take it home." That was good enough for me, and I laughed for an hour.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Mr. Leverone. He was my freshman year gym teacher and even though gym was not my favorite class, he always made it enjoyable with his humor and encouragement. What a wonderful man he was and I will miss bumping into him around town. My thoughts and prayers are with the Leverone Family and his friends.

Wow I am sorry to see this. I remember going to track meets with my Dad, and cheering teams that Mr Leverone coached. He was my biology teacher in the 1963, 1964 school year, and watching the Olympics with special interest, as well as the Boston Marathon. Condolences to you family and friends.

I had the honor of running track for Coach Leverone and learned from him how challenging and fun the sport could be. He assembled great teams filled with athletes of all sizes, shapes, and colors. A greater honor was being an opposing coach for many years. He and Bill Smith were a force to be reckoned with at Scituate High. I was also his student in A and P class and still remember many of the things we learned there. Yet, my most vivid image of Coach was of Jim doing a trampoline demonstration in front of the entire school at a rally in the gym. He was magnificent! Here's to you, Coach. A life well-lived, indeed. My sincerest condolences to Charlie's family. I met Charlie when he was picking up things from the "free pile" of stuff that I put outside my house from my clean out business Dirty Deeds. Once we opened our thrift store, Good Deeds, Charlie would stop in every week to see what was new. He was always kind and would sneak us girls a Werther's candy. I smiled every time I saw him. I am so glad that his family has this guest book to look at and see how much he was loved and how much of a positive light he was in this world. I will miss him.

Long ago Charlie, Toni and the kids were our neighbors in Plympton. One thing I remember about him was that he was a fine "collector" and I used to see him at yard sales , auctions and antique shows. He simply was a good neighbor and very nice guy to talk to. He bought some artwork by my grandmother Mildred Kimball at a Paul Dias auction in the mid-eighties. We will miss him and pray for the family. ........Dick, Helen, Rich, Mike and Merri ( Reynolds)

I had Mr. Leverone in my senior year of high school class of 1973. He was a most patient teacher and you could tell he loved to inspire his students. I myself became a teacher having graduated from UMASS. One of the most memorable things he said to our class one day was that he was so lucky to have married his wife and called her a good egg. So sorry for Charlie's passing. He was a cousin of mine and was so good about attending each one of my brothers services. He would always call at the time to offer his condolences. He was a good man and touched many lives in school and on the track. May you rest in peace. God bless.

Mr Leverone was my teacher. I remember I was very quiet in class and one day he said you see that girl right there and he pointed to me. Then he said someday she is going to be famous she will really make something out of herself. Everyone looked and at the time I thought oh my God everyone is looking at me. I never thought that all these years later I would remember that moment. This was a truly wonderful teacher and I will really miss not having him on this earth. Respectfully Wanda J Stevens

So much could be said about Charlie. Such a joy to be around. When we traveled to Florida in a caravan of three or four cars to compete against U.Miami, after the meet we ended up in Ft. Lauderdale (at the time relatively unknown), as Charlie crossed the street in his Bermuda shorts a lady (meaning over 40) declared, in a heavy southern accent, "that boy has the legs of a debutant". Nobody was more fun than the totally unique Charlie.

What a great person and coach! My brothers and I ran on Charlie's cross country team from 1971-1973, and I still run to this day - thanks to his kind encouragement and coaching. What amazed me the most is that even after many years, when I would run into him in Scituate, he still remembered my name and had a warm smile and hello. Nothing but fond memories of Mr. Leverone, a positive person and role model.

Nothing more can be said about a person than he positively influenced the lives of those he met. There is no greater honor than to be a teacher. Such a wonderful human being.

He was a classic and an inspiration.

Charlie was a great guy and a really good athlete. He helped me a lot early in my track career at UMASS. He always made an effort to keep in touch for many years after graduation. The tributes in this guestbook speak volumes to the impact Charlie had on others lives. Rest in peace Charlie.
