Obituary For Charles A. Smith
Charles A. Smith
September 23, 1934 – April 29, 2026
Charles Ashley Smith, 91, of Rockland, Massachusetts, passed away on April 29, 2026, with his loving daughters by his side.
Charles (known to many as Charlie, Chuck, or “Papa”) was born in Quincy, MA, and later moved to Rockland, where he resided for 59 years. After graduating from Quincy High School, he entered the military, first serving in the U.S. Navy Reserves before transferring to the U.S. Army, where he traveled to many countries throughout Europe.
Charlie was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Lisa Davide of Malden, MA, and her late husband, Joseph; Laura Cedrone of Rockland, MA, and her husband, Jeff; his brother, Robert Smith and his late wife, Dorothy; and his late sister, Jeanne Pope. He also leaves behind his four cherished grandchildren, Mark, Laura, Maddie, and Nick.
Charlie was a master plumber and pipefitter by trade and a proud union member for 54 years. He took great pride in his work, contributing to projects that included nuclear power plants and construction of schools, just to name a few.
Charlie also took great pride in his lifelong affiliation with the Free Masons. In 2024, he was honored by the Grand Master for 50 years of dedicated service—an achievement that reflected his deep commitment and loyalty. Beyond his Masonic involvement, Charlie generously gave his time volunteering at blood drives and donated gallons of blood through the Red Cross.
The former First Congregational Church of Rockland was a place where he not only worshiped but also devoted immeasurable hours of volunteer service.
Charlie’s legacy is one of selflessness and generosity. He was always willing to give his time, whether helping family, friends, or his church community. He also found great joy in traveling with his wife, family, and friends. Whether on cruises, road trips, or spending time at their home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He also enjoyed walking with his dog Zoey. These moments brought him lasting happiness.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Friday, May 8th at 10:00 A.M. at Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union Street, Rockland. The family will depart from Magoun-Biggins at 11:30 A.M. in procession to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Liberty Street, Rockland, for a graveside burial service. All are welcome to join the procession to the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
