  • 05/25/2021

Dear Carnathan family, I did not know Brett, nor do I know your family; however, I am deeply grateful for his service to our country and the sacrifices you all had to make while he served. I learned who he was when I researched why the flags are flying at half-staff today. It takes a special kind of person to dedicate themselves to the service of others, so he must have been *very* special. I pray that you find peace in your time of loss; while your hearts may ache, the Lord *is* watching over you.

i didn't know about Brett until 2 days ago, when my 13 year old daughter came home from school. Her teacher had told her class the tragic news about what had happened to a young man who grew up in Rockland, and joined the military to serve his country. The students were encouraged to write letters to him, as if they were pen pals. My daughter was sad, and not sure what to say, seeing that she never met him. I told her to write what her heart felt. She finished the letter and brought it into school the next day. The morning of Brett's service, the children of Rogers Middle School lined up along Union Street to honor the fallen soldier. Twenty five years ago i met, and married my wife, who grew up in Rockland. We have been living here since. I am saddened that i never met Brett and your family. I went online and found his obituary to find out a little more about him. Unfortunately i could not make it to the services, as i was in Lexington most of the day. I'm writing this letter with tears in my eyes to Brett's family and friends. The cemetery where his body is to be laid to rest happens to be on the other side of my backyard. I was home for about an hour today, when i opened the sliding door leading to my back deck. From there i could see the cemetery, and where Brett will lay in peace. His headstone sits just outside my property, in clear view from the back of my house. When i get home tonight, the first thing i'm doing is walking over and paying my respect to him, and letting him know how proud and honored i am, that he served our great country, and made the ultimate sacrifice for the people in it. Brett is a hero. I can not express it in any other way. I only wish i could have known him earlier in life. Every time i step out into my back yard, the first thing i'll see is Brett Carnathan, a true hero. My condolences go out to all of Brett's family and friends. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace Brett.
