My sincerest condolences sent to the Ashton family. I was lucky enough to be able to help care for Barry at the current.. he was my absolute best buddy. Him and I would always go around and make sure that all the windows and doors were locked so that everyone would be safe.. He would always help me with any kind of project I was working on. We had great conversations and he gave the best hugs. He would talk to me about how much he loved his family and he would tell me stories from his olden days.. He would always lose his flashlight or a piece of his flashlight and every week or so I would buy him a brand new one and he would have the most grateful brightest biggest smile on his face. He was so happy.. very cared so much about the safety and well-being of everyone that was around. We used to have tournaments in competitions on who threw a better beanbag or who was better at music, bingo. I could go on and on and on it was such an honor and a privilege for me to be able to health care for Barry and it was also quite a privilege for me to be able to meet him in the first place.. I hope he is resting in the sweetest peace. And I will certainly miss him and think about him often.. much love and respect being sent in your direction from Janet Woods and family.

It's been 16 years since I've seen Barry but our time together at the Olympics in Vancouver, BC in 2010 was memorable. He was keen, and funny, and collaborative, and understood how to make work equal parts fun and professional. My fond memories of him have been shared over the years with many colleagues at many events and my condolences to all whose lives were touched by Barry and his big heart.

Barry was one of those people who you could laugh and cry with. He inserted his unique humor when needed, but also gave great advice and hugs when needed more. I have so many memories of him, from childhood to adulthood to parenthood. He will be missed by all who knew him, and I'm sad that I'll never be called out again on what he would consider a "blonde moment"! Rest in the sweetest of peace, Barry. To the Ashton family, my heart is with you all. - Kim (Martin) Coyne

As an older teenager, Barry's favorite song was "Yellow Submarine." He sang it constantly and we were all glad he became a policeman instead of a singer!

I was lucky to get to know Barry when I cared for his Mother at Southwood Nursing Facilty! And our friendship remained there after. He was such a great man! Always a smile and full of laughs! I feel blessed for having him cross my path in this lifetime. My boys and I always brought him water when we saw him on details. He inspired my son to become a police officer as well. Barry you were definitely one of the great ones! Many people are going to miss you!

I'll always remember the times when after a heavy snow storm, everytime I would pick up my shovel and start clearing my drive way, Barry would magically appear behind on his snow plow and finish the job. He always was a true neighbor and friend.

To The Howes and Ashton Families, and to the Town of Rockland you definitely lost a good man there. I came to know him, as he had attended Rockland High School with my oldest brother and two sisters, plus I recall when he started out as an Auxiliary Police Officer then went on RPD Full-Time. He was a fair Police Officer and a good guy. RIP Barry.
