Obituary For Barbara S. Bonfiglio
Barbara Stella Bonfiglio (nee Matacunas), 88 years old, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Thursday September 26, 2024.
Born May 3rd 1936 in Boston, Barbara grew up in South Boston & Dorchester. She made the decision to become a nun & joined The Sisters of St. Joseph Convent at the age of 14. After having recurring dreams about holding babies, she decided a life dedicated to religion was not for her. She left the convent at the age of 16 and graduated high school from Cardinal Cushing High School in South Boston in 1953. She then
went on to work for the Edison Company in Boston until right before she was married in 1962.
She met the love of her life, Dominic, when she was 25 and always said “From the first meeting in the bar in
Boston, I knew he was the man I was going to marry & have a family with”
. So, they did. They went on to have 8
children and many “extras” as they liked to call them. The Bonfiglio home was always the hub of activity for their
children and all their friends. A great cook with an easy-going personality, she was the master of the one dish meal that could feed the masses.
She is now at peace with her husband Dominic Bonfiglio, her mother Stella Matacunas (nee Martinkus), her father
Mathias Matacunas, her son Stefan Bonfiglio, her grandson Dominic Bonfiglio, her granddaughter Sophia Bonfiglio, and her daughter-in-law Lesley Bonfiglio.
She is survived by her sons Eugene Bonfiglio of Indiana, Paul Bonfiglio of Hyannis, MA, Jerry Bicknell of
Casselberry, Fl, Peter Bonfiglio of Foxborough, MA, Joseph Bonfiglio of Hanover, MA, & David Bonfiglio of
Foxborough, MA as well as her daughters Maria Bonfiglio of Hyannis, MA & Nina Wright of Rockland, MA.
Sister of Ralph Matacunas of Mansfield. She will be forever missed by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held in the Holy Family Church on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 9:00 AM. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery.
Donations in her name may given to The St. Joseph’s Indian School of South Dakota. A charity she was very
passionate about.
