Obituary For Angelo J. Umbrianna

Angelo J. Umbrianna, 93, retired Chief of the Rockland Police Department, of Halifax formerly of Rockland died at his home on May 6, 2014 surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Cranberry Hospice. He was born at 37 Salem St., Rockland. Angelo was the son of the late Antonio and Mary (Luongo) Umbrianna, was raised and educated in his hometown, and graduated from Rockland High School in 1939.

Chief Umbrianna had been employed at the Fore River Shipyard as a truck driver before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served on board the USS Florence Nightingale, Wyoming and Marquette. He saw service in the Asiatic Pacific and in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatres, and was the recipient of the WWII Victory Medal.

Upon his discharge he became a patrolman on the Rockland Police Department and rose through the ranks to serve as Safety Officer prior to becoming the Chief of the department for nine years before his retirement. He served as the President of the MA Safety Officers League and was an active member of the MA Chiefs of Police Association.

Angie was an avid musician; he learned to play the guitar while he was in the Navy and enjoyed performing country music with his bands, The Down Yonders and Country Plus. He was an avid golfer, proudly hitting two holes-in-one, was an ace horseshoe player, and a champion "45" card player. He also enjoyed building and maintaining stockcars and working with the Bar 20 race team of which he was an owner. He prided himself as a "self made man!" More than anything, Angelo was a dedicated family man who brought much joy and fun to family and friends with his music throughout the years.

He was predeceased by his first wife Mary C. (Walsh) Umbrianna and is survived by his wife M. Lorraine (Gasdia) Umbrianna, his children Caroline Goode and husband Robert of Buzzards Bay, Diane Turner of Mashpee and Thomas Umbrianna and wife Cynthia of NH. He was the brother of Mary Anna Golemme and Anthony Umbrianna. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Robert Goode, Jr. Brian Goode, Thomas Umbrianna, Jr. and Kimberly Andrews, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate his life at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St. in Rockland from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday May 12, 2014. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church, 403 Union Street Rockland, MA on Tuesday May 13, 2014 at 9:00 am. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. I am so sorry to hear of The Chief's passing. I Was a rockland kid who grew up listening to him in the schools. Otto the Auto and Angelo. My Grandmother hired his band a few times and we would go listen to him play. On a personal note he supported me in taking the police test and becoming a Rockland Officer. He always supported the people of Rockland. He was a great Man! His impact upon the town of Rockland will last for generations. The town should be forever grateful to Angelo. I am glad to say I knew him! Please accept my condolences.

Caroline, - my heart goes out to you and your family in the loss of your great father and this amazing man. I, too, lost my dad several years ago. After the sharpest pain had passed, I realized that I hadn't actually lost him. I could still "hear" his wise advice, his laugh, and his words of comfort when I needed them. I knew what he would tell me and even what tone of voice he would use. And I realized that he had left me something invaluable - a legacy that keeps on loving and living. I know from our conversations that your father left you that - a legacy of wisdom, love, and life. Much love during this difficult time.
