Obituary For Anastasia "Anne" Griffith

Anastasia "Anne" M. (Fulford) Griffith, 70 died on December 19, 2014 at her home in Rockland. Anne born on April 11, 1943 on a tiny island called Merasheen in Newfoundland Canada, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. All services to and from the island were provided by government boats.

She was the oldest of 10 children. Her father was a fisherman as were all the men on the island. Her mother was a homemaker. Each man owned a fishing boat and pier. They did well when the weather was good but a storm could wipe out all of their fishing gears for the season.

Merasheen Island did not have running water, electricity or most amenities but Anne never felt deprived. Needless to say, there were many difficult situations. Anne may not have had everything she wanted but God provided everything she needed. Anne had her village. It was a close-knit community. She had lots of good times and celebrations. Babies were delivered by midwives who had no medical training but were women of great faith. Their black bags in most cases carried a crucifix and holy water only. A helicopter would air-lift any emergencies to a near-by hospital.

Anne Attended Memorial University in St. John's Newfoundland. She then taught grades 1 thru 12. Most recently for twenty years prior to her retirement in 2009 she had been a Contract Specialist with Harvard-Pilgrim Health.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years David Griffith and their 3 children, David Lee Griffith of NC, Michelle Haynes of ME, and Stacey English of Marshfield. There are 6 grandchildren, Jackson Haynes, Rachel Haynes, Ryan Griffith, Alex Griffith, Tyler English, and Alex English. She was the sister of Marianne Therriault, Theresa Gill, Loretta Adams, Ellen Fulford, Eddie Fulford, Charlie Fulford, Wayne Fulford, Jenny McNamee and Leonard Fulford.

The family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate her life on Monday, December 22, 2014 in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union Street, Rockland from 5-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 9 AM in Holy Family Church. After cremation burial will be at Holy Family Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Anne Griffith Charity Fund, c/o Rockland Trust Co. 288 Union St. Rockland, MA 02370.

Cyril and I are so sorry to hear of Anne's passing. There are certain people you meet in your life that you know will always be a friend - no matter the years or the distance. Anne was one of those people to me. An especially fond memory for me is the many nights we made cabbage stew to pass the time while we listened to a colicy David and each of us took turns trying to settle him down. She was such a kind, loving and patient woman who loved her family deeply. Rest in peace dear friend.
